Hi I'm Chris and I'm starting in my first classic over the next few days. Wanted to use the forum to document my progress and get any tips and hints.

I managed to pick up a little Cream Toledo on eBay. Transporter is booked for Wednesday. Not sure what it's going to be like we will see I guess.

Roll on Wednesday :D

Chris

All I would say is, WELL DONE :D

There's nothing like a classic car for lasting memories.

Thanks Guys. Just can't wait for it to turn up now. First thing is just to get it running and the to the MOT garage to get it road worthy. That will be my first milestone. At least it will give me an action plan of priorities.

Purplebargeken I'm over in Walton the the Naze. It's just finished with the classic season over this way. Hoping I can get it ready for the shows next year.

So today is D-Day. Off to pick her up after I finish work today.

Any recommendations as to what to pick up for a car that hasn't been started for a while (new battery a must) and the best order to start troubleshooting?

Fresh fuel is another thing. Check the condition of the fuel and coolant hoses. Make sure the carb is working and the float chamber isn't full of muck. I'd recommend fresh engine oil, oil fiter, air filter and new spark plugs. Make sure the engine isn't seized. If you can turn it by hand it should be fine. Oh and don't forget to check the coolant.

Thanks Toledo Man. That's a great list to start with.

From what I've been told the engine is turning just not starting. So that's one less problem.

Where is the best place to order/buy parts? Need to get my club membership sorted too.

I forgot to mention that you will need to check the ignition and the electrics. If you're getting a spark you're halfway there.

Well good sign. She's home and in the garage.

Tried turning her over and... No spark. :-(

First place to start? Will try to get some pictures up tomorrow evening when it's not pitch black out.

Where I always start is at the king lead. Gently pull it from the centre of the dizzy cap, hold it close to an earth (the rocker cover will do but use insulated gloves or pliers) and get someone to spin the engine. If a spark is present, the fault lies in the cap or rotor arm, if not, then the points, condenser, coil or feed is to blame. (or, of course, the king lead itself) either way you get to eliminate half the system with one test!
My money will be on it needing a new set of points and a condenser! A conversion to electronic ignition is a cheap and fairly foolproof improvement on any Dolomite but I always like to get them running on the conventional system first.

Steve

Steve is bang on the money. When I fitted a Sprint dizzy on my 1850, I got it running on points and condenser first before I fitted electronic ignition. I used the Britpart kit which has improved reliability no end.

As promised some pictures.

Hadn't quite realised how small my garage was until I tried to get it in.

Image

Biggest issue that I've found is a couple of pretty large holes in the front wing. Is that something that has to be replaced or repaired? And the tail of the exhaust is pretty crumbly. But the floors are solid. Think there could be a hole in one of the rear arches but it looks like its been repaired at some point. Overall pretty happy with it.

Image

The inside is in really good condition, so if nothing else I have that.

Had a look at the cap and it looks very new in comparison to the rest of it so maybe it's been replaced recently.
