Not good....water pump cover off again I'm afraid. Did it run at all after you did the pump?

Yes Jon started up fine so you think it's the water pump. I hope it is at least it's not another problem just something I've done

Oh okay then...if it ran ok with no nasty noises its much more likely that your tired starter pinion has just jammed
the ring gear and its nothing to do with the water pump.

Even if the pump had ridden out badly enough to jam the jackshaft, said scenario would have produced such horrid
noises that you wouldnt have wanted to restart the engine. When the pump bolt meets the pump cover it makes
a nasty squealing noise.

Its a git but starter off and then you should find the engine is free again. Sorry if I gave you a bum steer. Didnt realise
you had it running after the pump repair.

Have you tried rocking the car in top gear to free the starter?

I tried that Steve I'm going to give a socket on the crank pulley a go if not its starter motor off. I'll probably have to take it off any way

As it isnt possible to get a socket on the crank without taking out the radiator and loosing all your coolant
again I'd just do the starter. If it HAS jammed the ring gear then I doubt you will exert more force to free it
with a socket than you can by pushing in gear, forward and reverse.

Is that just for Sprints?

I use a socket on my 1850 without taking the radiator out.

It's a last. Resort try really Jon I've already got the rad off so it's worth a go. Looks like my bank holiday is booked up  also found a nice hole in the floor pan that needs to be welded I'll remember to post some pics this time
If it is the starter motor are they serviceable or do I have to buy new. I've already looked and they are eye watering expensive

They are serviceable. A local company quoted me around £60.00. I'm sure there are similar places near you.

Starter motors can be reconditioned. They're just a pig to remove. The 1850 is bad enough but the Sprint is worse!

Sprint starters are difficult but with practice its not too bad.

You need a 3/8 drive 9/16 socket on a longish wobbly extension. There is a recess on the starter that guides the socket
on and then it spins off the stud no problem...
At least the studs help locate it. On an 1850 you have to hold the weight with your arm.

There is a denso style hi torque geared starter that is a bit lighter but expensive. Depends on if you want to spend
the dosh...

After spending most of the day trying too remove the starter motor I'm now stuck sort of. Got the top and bottom bolts off fairly easily. The middle bolt is becoming a pain. I've loosened it but it's just spinning. The nut is so close too the exhaust I can't get a spanner on the end of it any. Any tips on how too overcome this will be most welcome

Ah, I think you have encountered the same problem I had with removing the starter motor on my 1850. There seems to be a few variants of 2 and 3 bolt starter motors around 1975 / 1977 on Sprints and 1850s with a mixture of fixing studs and thru-bolts and nuts.
My guess is that in your case yours is like mine with 2 studs and 1 x long thru-bolt.
What I had to use was an obstruction spanner like this one ...
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Elora-3-4-x-7-8- ... 41a29f4749

.... except it needs to be 9/16 a.f. and used on the head of the bolt behind the starter motor.
And the parts book wisdom says 3-bolt starters were only ever used on Sprints !
HTH,
Tony.

After eventually removing the starter motor which is what I originally thought was jamming the engine, I put a spanner on the alternator and tried to turn the engine but it was still stuck solid. So I the again tried rocking the car back and forth ( with the other half helping  ) but still jammed solid.
So I bit the bullet and whipped off the head and that seemed to do the trick, the crank now moves freely but I don't want to put it all back together until I'm sure about what caused it.I'm starting to think timing chain ?
Also I have some numbers stamped on the pistons,if someone could explain what they mean it be a great help and a strange nut on the exhaust manifold any ideas please thanks

Tom
