If a rear fog is fitted, it will be tested. If a rear fog is not fitted AND there is no obvious evidence of one having been fitted, it depends on your mot tester whether or not they will do the due diligence of checking to see if it should have one or not..

Similarly exhaust emissions - my car should have the emissions checked, if the car had been a few months earlier it doesn't need the emissions checked. It's the same car, just the rules changed. Some MOT stations know this, others don't, others don't seem to care.

I removed the front fog light wiring as it was no longer being used.

As far as the rear fog lights, there doesn’t seem to be a stalk for it or button in the interior, I wonder if it never had one?

The buttons on a bracket under the lower padding near the steering column. Worth double checking but when my tester checked up he said the requirement for them came in in January 1980. My car was manufactured in May 1980 so well in the need for them. A lot of cars were not registered for months, or even years, after manufacture so its quite possible that if this was lying around for awhile (1300s by then were not that popular) it could be that it was not fitted. How that works with the need for them from Jan '80 i.e. build date or registration date someone with more knowledge of the rules will need to give an input.

You could find out when it was manufactured by getting a Heritage Certificate.

I will attach a photograph of the fog light switch and its associated mounting bracket. I believe that although two fog lights were initially fitted you only have to have the offside one fitted to meet the current requirements.

The law on rear fog lights has never changed. You may have one light, on, or to the right of, the car's centreline. Or a matched pair. And the legislation is based on date of first registration (in this case 1/1/80>) not build date.

As far as factory fit goes, the wiring is there to permit a pair of lights to be installed, but only one was fitted by the factory to comply with the letter of the law. If you wanted a second on your new Dolomite in 1980, you got the dealer to fit it and probably paid for the privilege! Or they may have thrown it in as part of an "incentive package" to help shift what was was, by then, an obsolete model!

As late registration goes, I must look at the unmolested Sprint auto I have in my yard currently. Although registered in May of 1980, it was built in July of 1979, a combination of automatic transmission and Russet paint causing it to hang around on a forecourt longer than most! I'm pretty sure it has foglights fitted, but it will be interesting to find out if the wiring is in place in anticipation of the upcoming legislation as my memory suggests this is part of the series IV update on Sprints VA30000> which happened at the end of 1978. And since the wiring was installed (if i'm correct) at that point in time it's not impossible that the switch and at least one lamp would also be built on, even though it was not yet a legal requirement.

Steve

EDIT. I've looked at the late registered Sprint I mentioned above and I have to admit I was 100% WRONG!

The car does have a pair of foglights fitted and a genuine and correct foglight switch, but the wiring is completely amateurish with incorrect and different coloured wires used throughout and the loom is not the late design one with the foglight wiring incorporated into it! Nor does the parcel tray have the small section cut out behind the switch position that factory fit cars have, which means the switch and panel don't fit properly.

I'm forced to the conclusion that this is probably a dealer update, done on the fly to make the car legal for sale when it was, eventually, sold! Since the car was built only 5 months before the legislation mandating rear fogs was introduced, there must be other cars like it around and Jack's car could be one of them. It's also possible that the necessity for a foglight could have been missed at point of sale, but I find it hard to believe that the omission could have continued unremarked through 36 years worth of MOTs!

I too have a (rather poor condition) rear foglight switch WITH the required bracket, but my bracket is a Sprint (or HL) one and i'm not sure the flat dash one for Jack's 1300 is the same, it might be more like the one that houses the HRW switch on Toledos. Perhaps someone with a very late, flat dash car could post a picture of their switch installation?

I have a fog light switch you can have, no bracket though.

I can bring it to TDCIR if you are going.

This is the switch installation in my late 1300.

Comparing this picture with Richard's above (which is the same as my HL type bracket) It would appear there IS a separate bracket for the flat dash cars.

Thinking a bit more about my suggestion that a tester would have called the absence of foglight on Jacks car, I think I may have assumed too much. A registration date in May 1980 would give a V plate, but the V plate ran from August 1st 79 to July 31st 1980, thus spanning both sides of the introduction date for mandatory rear foglights. So a tester, not in possession of the V5 for an exact DOFR, and seeing no evidence to suggest foglights had ever been fitted, would just shrug his shoulders and ASSUME a 79 DOFR. I was working today, by pure coincidence, on a V reg 1500SE (actually registered December 79) which of course, quite legitimately, had no foglights or switch fitted and this is what brought the idea to my mind!

haven't done much on the dolly 1300 recently besides give it a bit of a polish for the TDCIR which was brilliant, never seen so many dollys in one place!

I have recently sold my toyota soarer and purchased this 1973 toledo 2-door, have wanted one of these for years since seeing one at a car meet when i had just passed my test. Here is my honeysuckle tolly, it's in pretty good nick I reckon, not really any huge jobs to do on it. Runs really nicely, not sure if it has been tuned but it seems to massively outperform my dolly, which has led me down the path of checking compression and other stuff to find out what's going on with it.

Image

Will post my findings and more about this car later.

cheers matt was nice to see you and the others!

have replaced the front ARB bushings and painted it, gave the rusty brackets a blast with the wire brush to get them paint ready

Image

thought i might as well give it a lick of paint as it's very exposed without a splitter.

Image

Have some bushes for the rear radius arms so will be getting on with those soon. over the winter i plan to start welding this car up as well as stripping it and replacing subframe bushes and so on.

Hi guys, thought i'd give a little update on what i've been doing. Hope everyone is keeping safe from this horrible virus. I can't wait for it to all be over and get going to some classic shows in the dolly + toledo.
Got to be honest have only really just started working on the dolly. Before this I have been working towards finishing off my degree while working full time so haven't had much motivation or energy to do anything big. Here is an update of the small things i've been doing however;

To begin with, I ripped out the head unit that was in the car, and my dad found this old radio he had in the shed and refurbed it. We sorted out the [s]rats nest[/s] wiring which had been wired up with the old speakers in the rear parcelshelf (I am looking for a replacement if anyone has one!)

Image

Here is what the new one looks like:

Image

I am looking for an original radio surround as well as this has been cut for a modern unit. Looking at HLs these might be different?

As well as this, I also binned off the old starter motor relay which was being used for an enertia-type M35J as the car now has a pre-engaged M35J from a late marina or dolly HL.

Image

The above picture shows where the relay used to be as it tidies the bay up nicely. I still need to wire up an extension for the starter voltage boost however the car doesn't seem to have any trouble starting anyway so not a huge priority.

I have swapped out the fusebox and voltage reg recently as last summer i lost all power to lights and indicators and suspect it was due to the highly corroded connections on the old fusebox. My gauges also seem to read slightly off so thought i should replace both at the same time.

Image

Another electronics related job i have done since posting last is reverting back to points, I was having weird issues with hesitation. This alongside the new air filter has fixed that issue and the car now pulls as it should after being timed up. My dad said he onced burned a hole through a piston with one of these air filters, but i suspect that was because it was running way too lean. That and it was a morris marina, a much inferior car to our triumphs

Image

The main job i have and still am doing is removing the ziebart from the engine bay. The paintwork underneath is incredible, and the octane sticker pictured has been preserved for nearly 40 years - looks like it has just been stuck on!

Image

This is a very long winded job, and I am doubting whether i'll ever get it finished, but it does make the bay look so much nicer. Here is a shot from the front, I have removed the bonnet to get to the ziebart that was by the hinges and front of the bay.

Image

Have also painted up the radiator brackets. I have another spare radiator which I am going to send off to be refurbished as the one in the car is missing a few fins and has seen better days.

Image

Here is the car on the last drive i took it on before the lockdown. It behaved really well and had no issues going up hills despite there being 4 people in the car. Really happy as it was barely running when i got the car and the brakes were almost completely useless.

Image

Progress has been very slow for this car, but now that my uni stuff is pretty much finished i'll have a lot more time and energy to work on the car and get some bigger stuff done.
My plans for the future are removing the engine and box from the bay, i have a seal kit for the gearbox and new oil for the box and diff. I will carry on removing ziebart from the bay, and then I will tackle some of the welding both under the car and on the bodywork. The worst of under the car is the boot floor, there is a crack where the rustproofing has come off and water has got underneath it. Will also be replacing the manifold gasket as it seems a bit leaky and any other gaskets that might be worth replacing while the engine is out!

Great update Jack and some good pictures too.

Always a tough time trying to balance study/work/hobby. I was in the same position many years ago now when I took on a Sprint project. When I was working on the car I was thinking 'I shouldn't really be doing this now' and when I was sat trying to concentrate on study I was thinking about the project all the time! In the end the Sprint went so I could focus. Worth it in the end.

The engine bay looks very clean indeed. The Ziebart has done its job well!

See you....sometime!

Glad it's over now Matt, I am definitely not the academic type so has been quite tough to be honest. Feels nice to be able to work on the cars without any worry that I should be concentrating on revision and essays etc.

Today's job has been taking off the heater matrix and washer bottle so I can carry on removing the ziebart from the bay. Whilst it was off I decided to wire brush it down and sort some of the rust then paint it. Not a perfect job but looks a bit better than before.

Before:

After (not assembled yet as still waiting for paint to dry):

The actual fan itself is in pretty good condition, but I will need to get myself a new seal for the blower housing as the old sponge turned to powder when removing. Will post some more pics when I have got a load more of the horrible black gunk off the bulkhead.

Coming on nicely Jack :D These things take time and it's good you can enjoy the car as well doing stuff instead taking it off the road. Keep up the good work 8)

Tony.
