The refit is going slowly, no heating in the garage is not so great (soft Southerner!). Got lots of stuff back from the powder coaters, so reassembled the pedals & fitted them.

Image

If you remember this car has had a roof swap, the roof used was from a later car, so the fixings for the sprung pull down grab handles fitted to early cars were missing.
I got some rivnuts but the holes in the roof rails were too large to fit them, so I ended up making up some small plates to fit the rivnuts into then riveted these to the roof rail, I think it should be as strong as the original fixings.

The wiring for the interior light has been fitted, so the next job is to fit the brand new headlining. I really want to get this fitted so I can fit the rear window, I trial fitted it with the old rubber seal & it was OK, but with the new seal it seams a bit tight, I'm just hoping we got the measurements correct when we did the roof swap.

Did the original car have the roof stiffener fitted that housed the central interior light in the earlier 1850s (Dolomites) I'm asking mainly out of curiosity as my series 1 Sprint parts book, published Sept 75, 2nd edition, lists it (part number 819153) but i've never seen one in real life, certainly VA 10624 DLA, mine and Alun's 75 series 1 auto, doesn't have one!

Also i'd like to get hold of one for the Toledo shooting brake project, it'd help with joining the roof together and help support and stiffen the larger area!

Actually, saying i've never seen one in life isn't quite true! My 72 1500FWD has one, complete with dome light. But i've not SEEN it, only felt it with fingertips behind the headlining. And i'm not robbing THAT one!

The original roof had a folding sunroof, so if it was there originally it was chopped out when the sunroof was fitted. There was no evidence of any remaining strengthening pieces either side.

Steve within the small saloon range,
it is only the cars with the early type rubber plug/socket looms that had the central interior light.
(This light was retained for the 2000 range though).

Ian.
So did none of the Sprints, even the very early ones (with the possible exception of the prototype that was built from a line Dolomite 1850 sometime in 72) have the rubber sheathed plugs and central dome light?

I had this idea that early Sprints would follow the trend of the rest of the range and swap from rubber plugs to Rists in mid 74 or thereabouts. The Carledo, built in Dec 73 still had rubber plugs when I got it (it has Rists now, because I fitted a Sprint loom and adjustable column from a 1980 scrapper) Perhaps I should know better than to accuse Triumph of consistency without compelling evidence!

I think if Tony's sunroof car had had the stiffener, there would be evidence on the cantrails, I used to fit those roofs and we weren't bothered about tidy, just quick! The bar would have been hacked off with a nibbler as close to the cantrail as feasible, say about a half inch to an inch left! Since I didn't start there till 76, I don't expect I ever removed a Dolomite stiffener, they were gone by then and most cars we converted were brand new. But I cut a few 2000 ones out! We had to make a plate to support the dome light behind the sunroof and extend the wires.

Exactly that, none of the Sprints had the central interior light.

I have one that has. It has also the rubber style connectors but it's a bit cheating as it's a LHD 1973 sprint just over VA2000 what was used for the type approval so probably one of the first LHD and maybe picked up out of the LHD 1850 production line and fitted with Sprint running gear. It has the old style gauges because probably the new style 230km/h weren't ready yet. It has a 2500 speedo fitted with 230km/h scale.

Not done much over the winter, now the weather is improving hoping to get a bit more done.

Fitted the new loom from Autosparks

Image

The roof lining is fitted, just waiting for a local trimmer to do the final gluing up, he says it is better for it to be a bit warmer.

Image

A few bits done in the engine bay, brand new bulk head pad fitted.

Handbrake lever fitted.

Looking very good Tony. How has the new loom fitted Tony. I have fitted old looms back in and hated it because they loose the suppleness , I always worried about rubbing on the metal bulkhead clips and anywhere else around the car to be honest. I know the looms on dollys are nothing like a modern but it will be a nice feeling when you connect the battery and everything works as it should.

First time I have fitted a new loom, like you I normally just refit the old one if it is in good condition, unfortunately the old loom was in a bad way on this car.
I think fitting the old loom is easier as it is already 'formed' to fit the car, so it just slots back in. The new loom was a little trickier but it is nice and supple so not too bad, just need to make sure everything is in the right place.

2 servos to choose from 1 knackered so started to clean the good one up, typically the good one is more corroded.

Sprayed the servo with a rattle can from Screwfix, came out OK.

Also managed to get the front & rear shocks & springs assembled & fitted

Trying to get my enthusiasm back for this project. The front subframe is nearly ready for fitting. Been working on tidying up the back axle. Attacked it with various wire brush attachments on the drill then a couple of coats of hammerite smooth. The axle is an early one VA121.
Hope to have it back on it's wheels soon.

Looks great Tony! Sometimes good to have a break from a project, otherwise it can become a chore.

I have a friend who took the bonkers decision to restore a Land Rover in time for his wedding - next week. He completed a 2 year project in 6 months and has done a great job of it too.. however is sick of the sight of it and vows never to do it again as it has put him under such pressure to complete.

Hope to see you at TDCIR? That always restores my enthusiasm.
