Seems to be one step forward two steps back of late with the old Tolly. Got all the threads fixed and the hubs painted and rebuilt, everything bolted on, started bleeding the brakes and one of the fittings into the wheel cylinder is leaking like a sieve and I can’t get it to seal. Gonna have to make a new piece of line with a new flare. So another few days to wait before I can go into town. I just want to get her back on her wheels!

Image

While I’m waiting I got some steel to make some blanking plates for the rear bumper holes, and spacers to push the spring clips away from rubbing on the trailing edge of the boot. Wanna get that done cleanly and looking smart. Plenty still to do, but have to wait till next month now after I blew this months budget on the 106 Rallye. Still, a nice view these days!

Greetings folks,
This week I fabbed up some cover plates for the rear bumper mounts and to tie in the tow straps. I also spaced the boot catch springs away from the rear panel so they don’t run on the boot lower edge.

Image

Then I focused on the external battery cut out switch, I sited it in the usual place, it’s bolted to the bulkhead through the steering column mounts, and cut out some of ribs in the bonnet grill so that the switch can be reached easily from outside.

Image

That was all tidied up and secured. Though on reflection I will probably have to alter the wiring so that it runs in series to the internal battery cut off switch. Then I started on the dash auxiliary panel which sits between the parcel shelf and the dash.

Image

This is bolted in through the parcel shelf mounts so is in there nicely. Then I fabbed up side panels to enclose it smartly, and welded nuts on the back so I can fit the switches and then bolt the panel up.

Image

So it will look something like this, with the internal battery cut off on the right, and initially a single bank of switches on the left, with room below for either another bank of three switches, or some kind of commissioning plaque.

The switches control spotlights, headlights, etc.
The panel and frame will go off for powder coating mat black next week.

This week I also swapped out a cross threaded brake coupling that was weeping and made up a new bit of line. I’ve had a go at bleeding the system but there’s still a lot of slop in the pedal movement so I’ll have another go of it.
Peace out! ✌🏼

A bit of faffing about making things look pretty

Image

The look is inspired by the Lancia racers of the early 70’s

Image

Made some stickers from our family business with the logo it used in period. The car will be used at shows and fairs to attract interest in the business.

Hi Jake lovely looking car same as my sons Valencia blue 2 door short bumper model, he had it on the road with the standard 1300 engine in but he has since took it off the road and been gathering bits up for it to improve it for himself, He is going the TR7 2.0 engine route with Sprint o/d gearbox and rear axle and already has the twin headlight set up, it has got the same interior but is going for an all black set up,
looking forward to seeing your updates on progress.

Any chance of a build thread somewhere Steve? There is a TR7 engine available in Finland, so i'm tempted to go the same route in the future. Thanks for your encouragement and best wishes to you and your son.

Small progress on the Triumph this week,

Image

I mat blacked the bonnet and added TRIUMPH-FINLAND across the nose in homage to the Lancia Finland rally cars. I did not like it. I took it off again.

Image

It’s better without but I’m gonna add a roundel. I ordered three so I can do the doors too. I trashed two before I figured out you should spray soapy water on the body, slide them into position then work out the bubbles. Live and learn.

Then I started running the cables for the interior cut off switch. I’m just gonna wire it in series from the exterior switch.

Image

I made my own bulkhead seal. Not the prettiest but it won’t be seen. I test fit my new steering wheel hub which fits perfectly to my relief, so next payday I’m buying a Moto-lita. Tomorrow I’ll pick up the roundels, buy the rest of the wiring for the internal kill switch and find a 3/8 to 1/2 converter so I can retorque the head bolts.

End of the month I will order the steering wheel, SU rebuild kit for the twin carbs I have, mudflaps and possibly the ARB end and center bushes.
When my friend Aapo comes over on Friday, we will bleed the brakes again and go for a few laps of the factory. I’ll take pics!
See ya next week folks.

Today’s little fixes:
Finally settled on roundels and no lettering

Image

Back to actual useful work. Got the internal battery kill switch wired up. The panel will be painted next week, but the wiring is tested and is working.

Image

Took the rockers off and retorqued the head and checked the gaps.
Try to bleed the brakes again tonight/tomorrow then it’s time for some rally action. Tomorrow promises to be a sunny bright day.

Well mate, the new auxiliary panel to go below the dash came out of the powder coating line today so that will get fitted and all the switches mounted. I expect to do that this week. Then it won’t be long till the end of the month and the paycheck, so I can order the twin carb rebuild kit and the Moto Lita wheel, and hopefully the ARB bushes too. Exciting times. She’s starting to look how I want her, so I’ll drive her like this for the coming summer then look at what my options are for upgrading performance.

Auxiliary panel came home yesterday and was promptly bolted up and the switches fitted and wired in. I got one of those old tape labeling machines to make the right kind of on and off labels for the period. The whole thing sits very nicely in there I must say.

It will be a couple of weeks now I guess till I have anything else Triumph related to post. Stay healthy everyone. 🤙🏼

It’s payday!
Parts have been ordered!

New Moto Lita 15” steering wheel
Twin SU HS4 carb rebuild kit
British leyland branded mudflaps
Also BL stickers and keyring because why not.
Very excited for these to arrive. I will also order the front ARB drop links if I have money left after food and bills etc 🤙🏼

Nice one Jake. I took the mudflaps off my car, I got sick of hearing them scrape on the road when I went around corners.
