When I aquired my Sprint in Tasmania, I inherited a large collection of Dolly Mixture magazines from 2002 - 2009. Over time, I have been browsing these (and wondering if, judging by the content of most of the articles, any Dolly is capable of moving more than 50KM without a major component failure). Well well well..Christmas edition 2003 contains a two and half page spread with photos of my very own Yeller Peril in it's incarnation as DL-5339. It was interesting to finally tie some of the obscurely worded receipts in the cars history folder with the modifications and repairs listed in the article. Although the previous owner knew of some front end damage at some point, he (and I) assumed it was crash damage. Turns out to have been a pretty catastrophic engine bay fire, with photographs of what looks like a traditional Australian BBQ; eg, everything burnt to a curly crisp. The rebuilt and repainted engine bay looked stunning. Of interest to me is that at that time, it still had the twin SU setup, rather than the Webers it has now.

One mod listed, for which I have the receipt as well, is "Central locking". Since it has manual locks, I assume that means the annoyingly temperamental ignition lockout unit. I thought about removing it but it seems to be intimately tied in to the electronic ignition, water pump and some complicated looking wiring involving a number of relays and fuses. Just have to live with the current starting procedure of "turn ignition, press keyfob and wait while the thing runs diagnotics. Time enough to buckle the seat belt, adjust all mirrors, scan the interior for lost pens and sweets, idly admire the clean headlining and, on random occasions, repeat procedure until all the red LEDs go off and a lone green one appears" I still do not know what the lone red LED attached to the bottom of the crash pad is supposed to mean. It flashes on and off at random intervals, but since it is hidden by my knee, it's not THAT important or it would've been placed within eyesight, surely, says logic.

Currently waiting for the last sole remaining mechanic in this town who knows how to fettle ancient British stuff to finish off an MGA and Super Snipe, to get my Sprint's clutch replaced with a standard unit and brakes sorted properly. There is a 4 month waiting list for his services but he's good. He's also talking about retiring soon. Damn, next nearest specialist is 400km that way >
