Having stripped the carbs a few weeks ago, today I attempted to fasten the throttle cable, but for the life of me I can't fathom out how the cable attaches
I think I can see that the end goes in between the bracket and then a clevis pin goes through and secured by a split pin.The problem is the split pin won't go through it appears to be too short. My memory is at fault because I can't remember how I took it off.I've taken a picture and maybe someone can help me. Hmmm seems to be different to my 1850 on twin cd150s. On my car (73 auto) the "forked" ended cable (As in your picture) is the inner fitted one for the kick-down and fits as you describe with a clevis pin and split pin.
My throttle cable simple has a "cross bar" end that is looped into the end of the carb arm.

Looks like a kick down cable to me as well. I think you have mixed the two up or "lost" the throttle cable. look around it will be there somewhere and then it will all "click" into place :)

Thanks for that, as it is a auto you are probably both correct and I have mixed them up. Thanks again Alan
