you have the space for one...... :)

planning permission is cheap and its not a difficult thing to draw so plans won't be too expensive, you probably know a builder.......?

Oi!! stop it you!!

Nah, if there's any building work to be done it'd be a two storey extension.
You're right of course David. Planning and plans are cheap and my bro in law is a qualified builder/bricklayer who seems to know at least three blokes in each of the other trades around here :D

Anyway, what do those in the know think of this part?
Image
Is it knackered, passable or fine as it is?
Is it the front tie bar? It connects to the front subframe and down to the Track Control Arm?
I seem to be good at dismantling rebuilding and finishing but name the parts? Pah, you've gotta be kidding

It looks absolutely fine Colin, just needs a clean up.

Have a look at the parts catologue on my website & run the part no. through my database to find the name. Front Tie rod.

218482:- strut front suspension
Hmmm, that's not right is it?

Front tie rod will do me :D

The reason I asked is that it looks worn just after the screw thread. Not having seen a new one, maybe it should be like that.

Good to know it's OK. I wont look for a replacement now

Right, a long time has passed and not a lot has happened on this car until tonight.

Starting at 19:00. I reassembled the rear brakes with new cylinders and a home fettled copper link pipe between them. -Drums were cleaned and painted with black POR15 about a week ago!
Changed all the fuel pipe flexis, one split when I tapped it with my finger
Changed all the Brake flexis for Goodridge braided ones 8)
Bled the brakes right through and now use the Automec DOT 5 fluid.
Front std pads are still nearly new.
Road tested at midnight. Man those brakes are transformed! they were very uninspiring but now they are very progressive right up until the fronts lock up.
The Sierra conversion must be proper good cos these are fine now :D

Handbrake is absolute tosh though. 12 clicks up and it starts to bite  but it's a nice even bite! Self adjusters are a breeze on these cars compared to some.
I think cleaning and fitting the old shoes from the red sprint was a bad idea but the new shoes are in the garage on the other side of town :?

Footbrake use tells me they are adjusted correctly as the drums were nice and warm after the test drive.

So it's MOT time in about 7 hours. Let's hope there is enough adjustment in the handbrake cables  (I'll find out in about 6.5 hours time)

Sleep well :D

With the handbrake like that you may have left out the shim between handbrake lever and brake shoe...
Its a small I or H shaped thing about 2mm thick and 1cm square...

Sure you know how to adjust the cables at the drum ends...cotter out, loosen locknut, wind shackle etc...

Use a wire brush and plus gas to free them up and regrease afterwards...

New clevis pins and split cotters are a good idea...dont leave out the wahsre underneath the split cotter.

Such an irritating teacher of egg suckers arent I...:-)

A shim? I don't remember seeing a shim!
Part no. 519760?
Balls!
I'll sweep over the area later today.
I really don't remember seeing them though. Not on the Green Sprint and certainly not on the Red Sprint :?

Where on earth would I be able to buy them from? Mr.Dolphin?
No, hold on, they are the same as a TR6, T2000 right?

I'm down with the cable adjustment, I might just sneak a pass. I wound the shackles right in and you can lock both wheels with a stern yank (fnar! fnar!) at 20Mph.

An irritating teacher of egg suckers? Nah, the washer is missing on both sides where the R clip that holds the clevis pins is.
I didn't even know they were missing either!
So that's a quick 2 min fix this evening. Hopefully with a fresh 12 month ticket in my back pocket [-o<

Ta Jonners

Yay, passed!! :jump4joy: :jump4joy:

2 advisories:
001, Nearside front wheel bearing has slight play [2.5.A.3c]
002, Near side outer sill slight corrosion rear end

Oh and emissions were high @ 8.11% CO but HC's were a mere 653ppm
MOT tester leaned it out to 3.2% CO which gave 965ppm HC's.

Quite surprised it passed in all honesty but that was only because I like to check things over myself before MOT's.
The tester is my bro-in-law but that don't mean anything when it comes to the legal bits and bobs, he's very thorough!

So, any ideas for where to get the shim pieces or could I make some from a template?

Got a bit more done today,
Stuck a fuel filter into the fuel line, at last!
Fitted the missing H pieces from the rear shoes (Thanks MikeyB!).
Coppaslipped and readjusted the handbrake cables, nice feel to the handbrake now! Four clicks is more than good enough for parking purposes.
Gave it a quick road test....
The brakes are still firm and even and I can't get over the difference made by just renewing the fluid and changing the flexis to braided ones.

Next task is to try and stop a couple of oil leaks. Fuel pump is a big one, Somewhere on the gearbox is another.
They are the worst, there is a small amount of seepage from the diff nose but I'll leave that one for a while

After that, a carb rebuild to try and get back the engine power that I seem to be missing :?
Oh and due for a service too I think :D

Refitted the carbs.....
I gave them a full rebuild other than spindle bushes, which didn't need doing.
So that was.
Big ol' clean out and polished the dashpots
All new parts fitted:-
Spindles, solid butterflies, waxstat jets, BBT needles, yellow springs, SU 20 grade damper oil, float valves, gaskets.

I put two copper washers under the brass float seat on the front carb to adjust the fuel level to match the rear carb. That seems to do the job nicely!

Reoiled the throttle cable and repaired the sloppy throttle linkage and painted the linkage plate with Por-15

F*ck me the car is fast now
I can now say that I've driven a Sprint which is probably not far off normal power 8)

Only thing, after a decent thrash about, I found there is an oil leak from underneath the waterpump (from the slot) and a small one from the fuel pump area (which I thought I'd fixed? Might be the pump itself?).
Oh, and a small weep from the rocker box too.

I'm sure the ignition is still not quite 100% right as far as advancing correctly goes but that can wait until the oil leaks are fixed :D

Very happy with progress but not able to make TDCIR this year :snivel: :snivel:

Have you just about finished all the jobs on the car? Sounds like it's going well

Nah, there are still loads of jobs that i want to do this car.

1, Full front subframe swap and general tidy up of the engine bay (including rectifying oil leaks as above).
I'm rebuilding a whole subframe from scratch. Everything will be new or recon along with polybushes and steering u/j etc.
2, Megajolt ignition upgrade.

These are the two big jobs that I want to do next. Hopefully before next spring/summer cos I want to get the bodywork spruced up in the next summer (if we have a summer that is   )

I'll then turn my attention to the rear arms/diff etc. with a full strip and Por-15 paint, polybushes etc.

Big plans but no pressure. The car is fully road legal so I wanna prep everything fully off the car then refit and drive!

Once this car is done then all I've learned will be done again on the pimento one using the green cars current subframe etc.
The engine/box/axle will stay with the correct car, it's just the suspension etc that'll swap if that makes sense. The benefits of having two Sprints eh?

Stay tuned, the front subframe will be ready soon.
I'll make sure of some decent pics

Oh the irony

Still, it's getting there

I'm just waiting for some poly rack mounts and steering knuckle from the ever helpful Chris Witor.
Only paint and fit ARB then do the swap

Etched with POR-15 metal ready

Hmmm few photos missing

So yeah, that's where I'm up to. Think I've lost a few of the assembly photos though

Oh and for the record, I've gone right off Hammerite. It just chips off
POR-15 doesn't though :D

Not a lot of point in poly bushing the arb if you then leave it out is there?

ho ho...

These are a git to fit to the drag struts. Last time I did one the car needed to be level and on its wheels to all go back in line. I think if you get the ends in and do up the drag struts you should then be able to bolt it to the sub frame. Use new clamps if yours are suspect. Fitchetts do them and they arent dear.
