 Post subject: Cooling question

New question,

Although we have the cooling quite under control for a long time, I wonder if their are some pictures or something about other water routing, i mean from the back of the head or something.
As far I know some TR7 16v had an other rear take of plate, but I don't see how this improve without un balancing the head temperature the cooling.
I have such a cast alu take of plate (instead of the normal steel plate) with an 1/2 " connection.
The water pump can be improved by an F3 pump cover but I guess these are very rare parts.

 Post subject: Cylinder Head Outlet

Hans,

Our cars have always run water outlets from the back of the cylinder head. The outlet from the head is connected to the top of the water pump cover, ie where the outlet to the heater use to connect.

My undertstanding of this mod was to stop a hot spot in the back of the cylinder, ie improve cooling to the back of the head. At one time I had a small cooling radiator plumbed in line between head and water pump cover. It seemed to help with cooling, but involved more plumbing, hoses etc.

I need to keep my heater for demisting the windscreen (and to warm the car). Do you think this mod would work OK if I took a tee off the heater hose?

Hi Mark,

The normal water routing, is that after the water has been in the block, it comes in the head at the very end of the block at cylinder 4 and start from there to run trough the head back to the front to escape trough the thermostat housing.

I don't see how a hot spot around combustion chamber 4 can appear, when the water is still collecting energy on its way to the head outlet at number 1.

I would think around number 1 the most energy is collected so probable also the highest water temp at that point.

I have also seen / measured that the intake tubes of the manifold (Weber) after cold starting up are much quicker hot at port 1 (the front port) than at port 4.

I just try to understand what real happen, is it possible that doing your routing, a certain amount of the cooled down water coming out of the pump now is been bypassing the block, and been feed trough the cylinder back plate direct into the head?? instead it comes out of the back plate, and leaving less water parsing the head on his way from the rear to the front ??.

If there is more knowledge about this subject just step forward ( Ken) we are only trying to beat the competition (BMW Escorts VW Golfs)

I used to run an outlet from the back of the cylinder head in the early days of racing my Dolly. I ran a pipe from the back of the head through an small cooler & back to the water pump housing. When I went to an aluminium radiator coupled with an electric water pump the water runs about 90 degrees C. Of course I have cleaned up & opened up many of the water ways.

So if I understand right the water routing went as I already thought, from the water pump pressure side a part of the water is pushed direct into the back of the head and bypassed the block.
In this line you connected an extra rad, was this a real water rad or a big oil cooler.

Our water temp is during racing about 190 till 195 and no problems, but I will try this on the test rig with the new engines, If the temp goes down a few degrease it is surely word doing so, thanks,
