I was debating fitting an auto box to my daily driver. Does anyone know if the 1850 auto box will fit on a 1500 engine. Is there anything else I will need to change?

Seriously guys is that it - 1850 auto box bolts straight on a 1500 engine (lose 1 pedal, swap a tunnel and make sure I choose the right gearstick (I can manage that Justyn!!)

Is there any change to the prop, gearbox mountings. Is the 1500 auto box any different to the 1850 one?

Not sure about the bellhousings etc!

Back axle ratios/props anyone? :)

I think the 1500 and 1850 auto share the same diff, 3.63 iirc, if thats the case you`ll need to swap that too. You`ll need to replace the flywheel with the 1500 drive plate, which i`m guessing is different to an 1850 item, you`ll also need the gearbox mount and a kickdown cable.

you've got the trouble to fit the torque converter. you may find it easier to get hold of an engine and box from a scrap car

you'll need the flex plate there maybe a collar for the converter to fit the crankshaft (instead of spigot bearing)but i really can't remember
the boxes do have slightly different internals ie. the 1850 might have more clutches in the clutch packs but it should not make a big difference any way
converters are same and of course the cross member.... etc will be needed
kickdown cable needs the fitting on the carb/s need to get linkage from carbs ? and dont forget it adjusts the box pressure so be very careful when fitting it (perhaps wiser to fit it in it's original pos) count threads or paint mark them under the nut
bell housing will be different

The engine backplate on a 1500 automatic-equipped engine is different to all other OHV backplates. You'll have fun trying to find one I shouldn't wonder, unless I still have my one in the garage. Then you'll find that the bellhousing is different. There was a 1500 engine and autobox in the Parts For Sale section for 50 quid....

Might be easier just to swap the whole engine and box for an 1850 auto. Im not worried about the speed, its just that the 1500 engine I have has just been rebuilt.....I'll have a look at the parts section as well.

Jonners, if you do have any of the bits I might need, then perhaps you could put them to one side for me......while I work out if its worth the hassle.

yes pretty much, crank was reground, that sort of thing. Runs beautifully

I'm guessing you have actually done this george. Not so worried about the fuel economy, I seem to get nearly 40 to the gallon as a manual, so a couple of miles as ahit wouldn't be too bad. The effort sounds a lot though. I'll start by advertising for a 1500 manual gearbox and keeping it as is I think. (or changing to 1850 and auto box for a while) Thanks for all your help
