I had that whilst I was driving once, luckily I wasn't going very fast. The cup washers on the rear subframe had rusted & the bolts pulled through. It then makes the steering go very stiff.

I had this once too....it was indeed the cup washers...
One had already lost the bolt unknown to me and the second one went causing heavy steering. I was glad of that column mounting bolt I can tell you...

Luckilly only a short drive from home. I was glad it hadnt happened while
looning about on some of herts finest twiddly bits on the way home from work a bit earlier...

Someone was looking after me...

Alos had it go on an 1850 but as the other side stayed up I just picked up the bits that I saw rolling around in the road and headed home gingerly.

Good time to check cup washers everyone...

Yes , had his happen to me too indirectly. The first instance was when i picked up my 1500tc The steering was very 'notchy' but more interesting was the gearlever nearly disappearing through the floor everytime you changed gear. There was already a 1 1/2 gap between subframe and floor ! :|

The second was more funny/lifethreatening and happened when we were breaking up my VERY rotten sprint. It was suspended 4 foot off the floor by a grab and i had just undone the prop and gearbox mount. Whilst sipping my coffee and contemplating my next move there was a ripping noise and the two rear subframe mounts pulled through the chassis swinging it all down and pulling the fronts out at the same time depositing engine, gearbox , subframe assembly on the floor !!!!! The sudden loss of weight to the now unbalanced shell caused it too buck around violently in the air. Bodies disappeared everywhere but luckily there was no harm done . Several cigarettes later (i dont smoke) and a change of trousers we ventured back underneath, man she was rotten and any guilt of breaking it was long gone !! :boggle2: :boggle2: :boggle2:
