Has anybody ever attempted to convert to power steering? I am finding the steering pretty heavy when parking. Getting lazy with my modern tin box having power steering!

I thought about a T 2000 rack which might have same mounting layout. Rack's rod ends could be replaced with Dolly ones to ensure correct overall width. Then the pump off a 2000 - might be possible to mount it somewhere at front of engine and use a longer fan belt.

Is the 2000 rack the same as the Stag?

If that's the case, I don't think it'll work. The Stag PAS system is fugging huaaage!

There's one on the floor at our house now :?

Electric PAS off a modern Corsa is an option and has been fitted to Escorts, it's a bit of a 'mare mind. Could be worth investigating though! :)

Maestro Montego rack I think was mention before 8) .

I have no need for Power Steering as the new V8 engine is 80lb lighter than a Sprint Engine.

meatro/montego/metro ranges if there another room between rack and engine/subframe.
electric power steering wouldn't work as its routed trough the ecu for the speed sensitivity.
failing that just pour oil under the tyres when parking.

I think the Corsa one has it's own control module - hence requiring no ECU support - seen them in a few rally Escorts besides some other kit...

Like this : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Corsa-rally-kit-E ... 0037717432

Bit troublesome to get it to physically fit, mind....

...or other options include:

1 - go to the gym
2 - always park on gravel/ice/snow/mud/grass/painted concrete
3 - find big enough spaces where you dont need to wrestle with it

or other options include,

1) Check your rack isn't tight
2) Check your Ball joints as well.

Suprisingly the V8S was quite light on the steering desite the weight of the V8 Did have new top and bottom ball joint's.

I would steer clear (Get it) of any electric steering on a Sprint unless you wish to uprate alternator and wiring even further.

That's usually my answer. Doesn't work too well in my fiesta. Unless I'm going backwards. Done some good J-turns in fields this year. 8)

My dolomite familly does vary quite a bit in the steering weight department. Nicest is the blue 1850 on Sprint alloys bizarrely. Then my other Sprint is on 185 tyres and is lighter than the brown one on 175's.

The TR7 1850 has 175 tyres but on the std rims and feels horrible at the mo cos the to column u/j is stiff and needs sorting.

I think the 1st place to look is the column top u/j, particularly if the steering feels a bit non linear. Then as Phil says the ball joints could be stiff and then the rack itself.

I dont think a dolly really needs power steering if well set up tracking wise and everything esle is as it should be.

My 8 stone weedy mrs never complains about the steering anyway...maybe cos there's lots more to moan about.
