Thanks lewis, I just pressed submit a little too early, I might add them later if ebay is a little less glitchy than it was earlier..

So a manual o/d one was variously tested in the 11 secs to 60 region and top end of 99-105 mph depending on which autocar test (it was done more than once cos they liked it so much) or motor test.

Again they do vary quite a lot in real life, especially as they get older.....

A slant 4 isnt that far off the pace by modern stds really cos 16v and efi 1800's are usually around the 130 bhp mark. (Ford VW peugeot).

With efi and leccy ignition a good 8v slant 4 would be about the 110 mark easilly.

I reckon you could pull a lot more out of one on 4 throttle bodies, maybe bike ones - as with FI really really hairy cams become streetable, because you can actually get the fuelling spot on.....

Carb'd cars always 'come on cam' more strongly, or behavive 'cammily' because they're fuelling systems are inadequate to cope with the demand at that precise point in time.....carbs are good in certain applications and you can't beat total through-put of a big carb but for getting fuelling accurate and driveable, FI is the be all and end all.

Not saying you can't get a beautifully driveable set of carbs, with good fuelling and good behavior but to really get it spot on, nice electronic fuel injection system..

The slant 4 dolly was also particualrly good in the Mobil ecnomy run, regularly returning 40 mpg and best in class figures.

But if anyone had some ideas about how to do a good efi setup I'd be up for trying it. How about twin single point injector units to replace the SU's and the ecu of soemthing scrappable like an early efi astra or corsa?
Stick a lambda sensor in the down pipe somehwre and it should be doable...
What esle would you need? Speedo sensor? Throttle position sensor?
Engine revs?, ignition advance? and a way to remap an eeprom..

On the cheap:

Bosch efi system from another 2 litre car, including all the sensors. I've heard of it done using cavalier injection.
Crank trigger wheel and sensor
Coil pack and leads
Water temp take off in block somewhere
Plenum to allow single throttle body of original system (depends what cam you're going to run)
Injector bosses in the manifold.
Injection fuel pump, filters, lines, fuel rail, regulator etc. Return line and fittings to tank. Swirl pot may be needed.

I understand you can get a reasonable approximation by fiddling with the pressure regulator to get the fuel flow correct for the engine.

Of course a DCOE manifold, 4 throttle bodies with injectors and a programmable ECU would be better but considerably more expensive.

Jonners, there is a much easier way. The later TR7s came with fuel injection, so you could fit that manifold, with all the high pressure fuel rail gubbins attached, then attach a bigger throttle body and injector from a scrappy. Get Megasquirt fitted and then the whole shebang should cost less than £200 I reckon, less the setup costs.
