I know that the sprint wheel stud sizes changed around 1976. Did the wheels change or was just the studs and nuts? |

I've got one of my rear wheel suds that has been snapped off so I need to buy a new one which Rimmers do seem to stock. Mine measure as 3/8ths but I can see on Rimmers that there are 2 lengths - what's the differentiator? Any obvious in this pic which one this is? Mine is a very late, 'early' car. |

Thats the very reason why i went over to steel wheel nuts,Mine measure as 3/8ths but I can see on Rimmers that there are 2 lengths - what's the differentiator? Any obvious in this pic which one this is? Mine is a very late, 'early' car. Dave |

To me, your stud looks fine, it's the nut that has stripped its thread. I can let you have a spare nut when you are next over. |

Although the wheels remained the same there were two manufacturers of Sprint wheels and I'm sure that until about 1976 they also had a date stamp on them. |

There were two manufacturers but the one, Sterling Metals, were a wholly owned subsidiary of GKN, the other. All wheels are date marked.

The stud and nut in my pic are a 'good pair' there's one on the other side that's snapped off. If it's the wheels that determine whether its a 'standard' or 'XL' stud I need I'd better start looking at my 9 wheels for a set of 5. You never know , they might all be the same type ... Once I know the date/manufacturer which wheel goes with which stud? Or is it obvious by the thickness of the wheel mounting faces ? |

All wheels are virtually identical, save for GKN or SM markings; it is only the studs and nuts that changed |

Up to 1975, ie all series 1 Sprints (pre VA 15000) which should include yours, there is only 1 wheel stud listed for Sprint, front OR rear. That is part number 158729. It's possible the overlength ones are a mod or for use with spacers or the homologated compo vented discs or something like that.If it's the wheels that determine whether its a 'standard' or 'XL' stud I need I'd better start looking at my 9 wheels for a set of 5. I'd be wary of fitting an extended stud as the alloy nuts are "capped" so an overlength stud might bottom in the nut and give a false tight feel. Steve |

That's good sensible advice, thank you I'll order a short one and look for a wheel nut to suit, or maybe a set of steel ones... |

I have s/h 3/8” studs here and will be listing a set of steel 3/8” nuts in Jon Tilson’s things shortly |
