Anyone on hear put a ford type 9 gearbox in a dolly 1850? How hard is it, whats needed to do it and where can the parts be sourced from?

My 1977 dolly 1850HL's gearbox is wining like a b'stard it is an overdrive gearbox but I'm waying up my options on fitting a Ford gearbox

Ian has done it, you'll need one from a V6 I believe, they are getting rare and are expensive when they do come up though.

I'll let Ian tell you about the fitting details.

You can get a hydraulic conversion, I have one on the K Midget. The cable isn't that great.

Thats handy,didnt know that,so he may get away with the original 1850 clutch ?

Yes I have done that.

Parts required:
Ford Sierra/Capri long input shaft T9 gearbox, these come from either a V6 petrol or any diesel.
T9 adapter plate (available from Canley Classics to order).
Sierra gearbox mount
Sierra speedo cable
front section of a Capri (T9) propshaft
1850 bell housing
1850HL clutch components.
Sprint tunnel (preferred).



The gearbox remote needs to be shortened to relocate the gear lever.
The tapered nose of the input shaft has to be removed and a new taper applied.
This is all quite straight forward really.
The adapter plates are designed for Heralds, one 1850 bolt doesn't line up so a new tapped hole in the adapter is required.

The Sierra gearbox mount can fit a modified Dolomite o/d cross member.
The Sierra cable fits an 1850HL speedo and there is no need to have the speedo recalibrated.
The 1850HL clutch plate fits the Ford splines (the 1850HL plate was first used on Fords in the 60s) and the
Triumph hydraulics all work because the 1850 bell housing is used.

Sounds far easier to just fix the layshaft bearings in your own box, the probable cause of the din.

I don't know the ins and outs of this but would not a TR7 box be a better option?

The LT77 gearbox bellhousing interferes with the Dolomite subframe and steering rack necessitating part of it being cut away. It also then requires either accustom propshaft being made, or the sourcing of an automatic Sprint item.

It's also blooming heavy!

After fitting the T9 'box to the 1850 I wrote an article for the Club magazine detailing the work.
In this I did say that if I had an o/d 'box I would stick with it,
however I am of the opinion that a T9 in a Sprint is a good idea because the gear ratios are better
and to this end I have a T9 'box to go in my Sprint EFI project.

There is much welding and welding to do before looking at the mechanical parts.....
