Those clocks are the strangest things I've seen. A genuine clockwork clock that is wound up by the car battery. How bizarre. Mine works but loses about 15 minutes a day. I just set it right when I get in the car and its good enough for the day. I believe JDO instruments can convert them to a quartz movement for a fairly hefty sum.

That would annoy me more than one that was only right twice a day.

I have several of the later clocks that DO work. But I have no idea as to their accuracy, i'll have to do a 24 hour test!

I'm seriously considering dropping the original clock from the Dolomega's dash as I'll have 2 further clocks (one in the stereo and one in the Omega's trip computer that I am including) I just have to find a way of filling in the hole it occupies!

You will have to replace the clock with a mirror Steve...... That way you will see the grin on your face when you are finally driving it 8) 8) 8)

Tony.

Nah, i'll probably fit some Cavalier GL sunvisors with illuminated mirrors in them to take care of that task!

I've looked at getting a local chippie/cabinet maker to make me a blank panel or adapt a lump of a spare glovebox lid (which is just a shade too short) but the one is too expensive and difficult to match to my original set, and the other is just not quite right, though it could be the best alternative. Or I could fit another warning light cluster, but then i'd have to find things to give me warnings for! It may be simplest just to leave the clock in place, if it keeps bad time and annoys me, I can always disconnect the wretched thing! I just hate things that don't work!

Did all the Dolomite HL dashes come with the Kienzle clock out of the factory? Mine has a Smith's clock. Quartz powered and to be honest I wish it was a Kienzle. Much more interesting with their electro but mostly mechanical design.

Earlier cars and Dolomites (the pre HL 1850) had the Keinzle clock, later cars (75>?) had the Smiths clock. But, of course, back in the day, if your Keinzle clock failed, the replacement you would be sold is the more more reliable Smiths jobbie! Don't think I have a Keizle one here though I have several of the Smiths version! I think that, although it turns out the Keinzle is easy to repair, most were just swapped out when they went wrong, so they're quite rare, certainly the earliest face ones for the Dolomite are extremely hard to find. All Sprints had the "easyread" font instruments, so subbing in a Smiths one is a practical proposition. On a Sprint, the only way you can tell a Keinzle clock from a Smiths one from the outside is by the makers name on the face!

If you read the actual repair article, it tells you how to adjust the clock to keep better time!

I read the article and decided to have a go at a couple of old Dolomite Kienzle clocks that haven't worked in years. Getting the face off seemed even more difficult than described, at least in a way that ensured it wasn't damaged. Both of my clocks had only one nut on the rear that needed undoing for the mechanism to come out of the casing. Neither had blown the fuse /melted the solder, so they were doused twice with a good stream of WD40, and when drip dried, reassembled. They now work perfectly, all that remains is to check and adjust so the time is accurate. Easier task than I thought it would be.

Just of note Steve is both my Sprints, VA178**, registered in Oz in 6/76 and VA300**, manufactured Dec 78, have Kienzle clocks. I know the history of the latter so believe that clock is original. Not seen a Smiths one!

Geoff

The Kienzle brand was owned by Smiths. Some clocks are marked as neither Kienzle or Smiths!

Has anyone gone with the Quartz conversion on these ? I know folk who have done that with other Marques but not yet the Dolomite / Kienzles.

(apologies if there's a thread on this somewhere)

I guess it wouldn’t be that hard to buy a small AA battery powered clock from somewhere like Argos and swap the internals over ? Just leaving the original face and hands ?!

Might be worth having a play with one of these for the price? And if you have the time? Pardon the pun

I have had one of these on my motorbike for several years. keeps good time for a cheap clock, should come apart easily enough. The hard part will be getting the hands off to swap them over.

eBay item number:123774195616

Just paste the number into the search box.
