The official Triumph 1500 hl documentation indicates that a lip seal, part number 132292, was introduced around about 1977. It is believed that this to improve on the original scroll seal. Has anyone seen this fitted and can they advise if it just pushes into the bell housing or was some machining carried out to allow it to be fitted. Also which way round should the seal be fitted.

Not a straight swap.
In fact, I wonder if the gearboxes are different between scroll and seal type. It certainly rings a bell..

Have dig about, spitfire stuff will be easier to find info/part numbers.

Many thanks cliftyhanger.

Having had a look in some spitfire documents I found it and then when I went back to my 1500hl parts book it was there all the time but not very clear. You have to change the original Front cover bush, part number 122566, for a UKC7926

The part seems to be readily available.

I will have to an addendum to part 4 of my A to Z on Dolomites which is in the current edition of Dolly mixture.

I wonder how many people have made the change?

Andy Cook did the reverse when he got a rebuilt ODbox from "Pete the Gearbox Man"
I am certain he had to fit a scroll seal block to the bellhousing as the input shaft was different.

I am seeing Pete today, I will enquire...

I think following the help provided I have now got to the bottom of the issue.

There are two different input / constant pinion shafts ; Part number TKC1267 which goes with the scroll seal type and Part number TKC3259 which needs to be used with the lip seal and two Front cover bushes. The scroll seal type is part number 122566 and the oil seal type is part number UKC7926

The message is if you are fitting a replacement gearbox there is a need to check that it's input shaft and the bell housing are compatible.
