Another vote here for the timing, some EI do run on different timing. and I'd change the plugs for standard electrode NGK plugs

Drained the tank, fresh fuel, new points and condensor, setting the points and winding the carbs in 8 flats each saw the engine fire first turn of the key.

However, it was idling at 3000 RPM and then with erratic idle without any apparent external influence. As the engine warmed, dropping the jets about three turns apiece I managed to get the idle down to about 1600, but it remained erratic. Have concluded the front carb mount is leaking badly, allowing air to be drawn in randomly, so I'm going to replace the mounts with a good s/h set I have and then set up the carbs from first principles.
