Technically speaking, it's been elegible for MOT exemption since last August so I COULD add it to my trade policy (which costs me nowt) and have it officially "on the road" VED free, now! even though it's 6 different colours and not remotely driveable yet!

Why not try taxing it without putting it on the MID first, then come back and tell us that insurance wasn't checked when you taxed it (as happened with mine twice)
Well if I do it at the PO, they are savvy enough there to know they don't need to check the insurance on the day, so i'd "get away with it" at that point. The only question is when (or if) i'd get a rude letter from DVLA telling me to insure it - or else!
Because I have motor trade insurance, the car is automatically covered if i'm "driving" it anyway, notifying it to the database is just a formality to keep the feds off my back! Until this recent change and the introduction of the MID database, I never had to notify my cars straight away, just declare them at renewal, as it could slightly affect my premiums. But in those days, I always carried a copy of my insurance cert around with me and once when stopped for no valid reason a few years back by a motorcycle cop, even the cert didn't satisfy him and he phoned the insurance company to make sure it was legit, keeping me stood at the side of the road for half an hour in the freezing cold. At least with ANPR and the MID database THAT shouldn't happen again!
