What's the current recommended oil filter and points manufacturer for the Sprint.? And where's best to get them from.?

Thanks

I cannot voch for them Len but classic spares seem to sell these items on ebay. The points appear to be Lucas boxed at least although these days that is no guarantee of quality, I would be more concerned with trying to find a good supplier of condensers. I do not believe the club stock these items probably because of the issue of quality.

There’s a nos unipart condenser on eBay at the moment. Could be worth having? Probably better than the recent Lucas green boxed ones. There were also eight, nos red Lucas boxed sets of points sold recently. Not much use to you now I know. But shows that some decent quality parts do come up on eBay. The quality of the condensers available at the moment leaves a bit to be desired - I had two dud ones that I fitted to my Vitesse - which makes me think I may go for electronic ignition on the Sprint.

Electronic ignition is not an option for Len I'm afraid.

If people prefer points and condensor rather than electronics (other than show cars perhaps) then why not try an external condensor? It's just a capacitor - albeit it has to withstand a high voltage - surely there are options out there?

I'm going to try Martin Jay (Distributor Doctor ) He makes his own as the mass produced ones are rubbish, not sure he does one for the Sprint dissy, I've emailed him to ask.

A Sprint condenser is the same as an OHV condenser (or just about any other Lucas distributored car of the same period) I can't remember the condenser part number off the top of my head, but the points that it goes with are Lucas part 54419946 if memory serves.

Thanks Steve.

I've ordered some Lucas points on an orange card that says 54423769 / CS8 , hopefully better quality rather than the current green boxed Lucas ones.

Ordered one of Martin's condensers, £6.95, made to his own specification.

How did you get on with the condenser Len?

Is the no electronic ignition due to regulations in a racing series? Otherwise I can't see the point of sticking with old tech. Points and condensers are an inherently crap way of switching a coil, an electronic system is far superior.

Len want to keep his Sprint original down to the points and condenser. It is worth keeping a set of points and condenser as a backup for electroic ignition. I've had electronic ignition fail on me on the road.

Steve is absolutely right. The Sprint has a Lucas 44D4 dizzy which uses the same points and condesner as the 45D4 which is used on the OHV cars. It is also possible to use the 44D4 in the 1850 but the adaptor plate, a 45D4 dizzy cap and rotor arm would be required. Also, the advance curve would be wrong for the 1850.

Len's Sprint is probably the most original early one in existence being low mileage and never been restored, as such it is key as acting as reference point for anyone wishing to restore the very early cars. To that end Len makes every step to keep it historically correct.
It is probably only 2nd to the one at the Coventry Museum but in much better condition
