Hello folks. I have a question.... the engine out of my long hibernating 2 door Toledo is toast. I have been offered a known good engine, gearbox and subframe out of another car. The Tolly gearbox is a single rail if I remember correctly, would the engine from a presumed 3 rail gearbox car fit the original gearbox? Or... would I be better off to just swap the whole damn lot and would doing that raise any further issues? This engine swap stuff is new to me despite having had tons of these cars over the last 30 plus years.

Cheers

Ken

Hi the swap should be easy enough the only complication would be the clutch if you have a mix of single rail and 3 rail gearboxes. You would need to use the clutch that belongs to the gearbox you are using as the two types of gearboxes have a different number of splines on the input shaft

Cheers, I plan to use the donor engine and gearbox complete. I will pull the gearbox and engine apart and replace the clutch but as it is the original pairing that shouldn't be a major hassle.

All two door Toledos would have have been fitted with a three rail gearbox originally, as production of the two door versions ceased before the change to the single rail gearbox. If yours has a single rail, it means its already been changed.

Apart from the different clutch driven plate due to the change in the number of splines on the input shaft as stated above, there are a number of other differences between the three and single rail installations:
Prop shaft (different lenghts)
Speedo cable (three rail screws onto the gearbox, single rail is held in place by a small plate which in turn is bolted down)
Exhaust down pipe support bracket (bolted to the gearbox mount), the three rail type will not fit a single rail gearbox.
Gear levers are completely different between three and single rail gearboxes.

Hope this helps.
