 Post subject: Timing chain tensioner
PostPosted: Wed Aug 07, 2019 8:22 pm
Have a 1977 LHD Sprint and timing chain getting noisey had it replaced a few years back A mechanic had a quick look thought it could be the tensioner that was not replaced at that time. So any advice on what one to buy as I see negative comments on the Roland.

I think there's be a lot of discussion about tensioners, try a search?

Robsport in the UK now sell a good tensioner for the Sprint. Do not buy Rolon, known to be crap and still being sold by some suppliers.

Plus one vote for the Robsport Tensioner, if I remember correctly it's a jaguar xj one. It's what I fitted to mine after the Rolon one ate itself

I have rebuilt quite a few sprint engines now and I often find that the original Renold tensioner is in very good condition and just because it has light grooving does not mean its useless.
I would not be in a hurry to replace perfectly useable parts. Chain guides and tensioners with grooves cause the tensioner to get nearer its limit and become noisy, so just reset the tensioner and many more quiet miles can be enjoyed.

That's my choice also. Better using good original used ones than new repro guides.

As mine was beyond use I went the Jag route also. Not a bad price either.
