Thank you all for the further advice. I'll not do the fan thing unless I have problems in the summer which can't be solved by other means. I shall go for electronic ignition and rear belts (have bought Securons) per the picture. I'll do the rule lines too as that sounds sensible.

Thanks again.

Richard

Some Super unleaded are now 5% ethanol, I went to fill up my Dolomite at the usual station and found a new E5 sticker on the pump so went to BP round the corner. A couple of weeks later I was running low so went into an Esso garage to get me home, that to had a new E5 sticker. Had to use it to get home but looks local to me in Yorkshire its spreading.

I have had my 47000 mile Dolomite 1300 for 7 years it has had the fuel hoses replaced, but I use super unleaded with the timing set at the original settings because it runs much better, and other 1300 owners seem to agree with this. I use an additive with a stabiliser more to protect for the odd times Ethanol ends up in the tank. If it helps the valves it helps if not it does no harm. I fitted electronic ignition because of the very poor quality condensers which fail a lot. I do not have an electric fan and find if the cooling system is in good condition it works fine. If its a hot day and stuck in traffic and temp starts to rise just put the heater on to be safe and its never overheated. A friend who has a 1300 has fitted an electronic fan but he did it for improved engine efficiency. Higher engine running less fuel plus no fan taking power from the engine. His is a daily driver mine isn't so to him this was important.

Fuel vaporisation has never been a problem and the single carburetted 1300 were not fitted with them just the twin carb 1500s
Hi Rob, The info I have is that Super unleaded ONLY contains ethanol in 2 small areas of the country, 1 is in Cornwall, not sure of the other. But the E5 warning has gone on pumps nationally just in case! I noticed both the garages local to me that sell Super have added the warning, so I asked and they told me theirs definitely DOESN'T have ethanol but they are still obliged to display the warning! It's just more mad beurocracy, MAY CONTAIN NUTS!

I like electric fans for the same reason your friend does, controlled hotter running with consequent better efficiency and less parasitic loss driving a fan which does nothing useful over 5 mph so a little bit extra fuel economy. With a daily driver, every little helps! On a more "occaisonal" car, it's not so important and for concours, obviously a no-no.

To Richard the OP, please note that when you do the fuel hoses, besides the obvious underbonnet hoses and the usually visible one out of the tank, there are 2 more short rubber pipes in the line under the car, 1 just forward of the rear trailing arm and the other against the rear face of the front footwell.

Steve

I did check a while ago and was told the same that it was only Cornwall and Teeside. Then I noticed the E5 stickers on all pumps so assumed things had changed. A quick check of a couple of websites shows Esso still saying no ethanol in super other than Cornwall and Teeside and Scotland:

"The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains up to 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland"

I then found this on the BP website:

https://www.bp.com/en_gb/united-kingdom ... els%20mean?

Which says

"The Department for Transport has introduced regulations that legally require new labelling on all fuel dispensers and nozzles in all UK filling stations by 1st September 2019. BP is here to help you understand the new European Biofuels labelling. "

Basically ALL petrol pumps are labelled E5 and "MAY" contain up to 5% ethanol and Diesel pumps are labelled E7.

But in essence nothing has changed, so business as usual.

Roger

Hi all,

Thank you to all those who provided advice to me 13 months ago on settling in and updating my new car. I have followed most of this advice and shall shortly put the car back on to the road - just need some dry roads!

You might wonder why everything has taken so long. It has been quite a saga. The car came from a classic car dealer in South Norfolk who has been trading for over 30 years and who has fine online feedback. These factors made me confident to buy unseen, something I shall not do again with an older car. In short:

- advertised with a full MoT, the car arrived without one as a result of an admin error freely admitted by the dealer who offered to fund repair at my trusted local garage. He was as good as his word. The car failed the test badly, mainly due to deterioration of the braking system apparently due to lack of use. We all make mistakes so no problem other than that....

- it was some weeks before the “classic” mechanic at my local garage had capacity to work on the MoT, the updates and an issue which had been identified with the transmission. At the time, the issue was assessed as likely to relate to the clutch master cylinder (there was a used one in the boot).

Fast forwarding, the transmission issues were serious and required a new clutch and a gearbox rebuild during a national lockdown when garage staff were furloughed or working on contracts for NHS, St. John’s ambulance or military vehicles. That is where the time went!

So all is well now but for a lengthy polite debate with the dealer around how much he might contribute to the costs of the transmission repair. If anyone examined and rejected a red 1981 1300 at a classic specialist in South Norfolk in the summer/autumn of 2019, I should be very keen to know what your observations were!

Thanks again for previous advice.

Richard
