Post subject:  Sprint rear brake assembly

Hi all,

Just putting the Sprint rear brakes back together.

Q1. Which of these goes on the driver’s side ?
1. Turn the cog clockwise and the cog comes towards you.
2. Turn the clockwise and the cog goes away from you.

Q2. What is the correct fitment of the U clips ?
1. Flat clip on first from the left ?
2. Flat clip on first from the right ?
3. Spring clip on first from the left ?
4. Spring clip on first from the right ?

Next I found that the 2 retainer springs are different lengths. Does that matter ? Which is correct - 12cm or 13cm spring ?

Thanks, Richard

Thanks, Richard

Spring clips.
Flat clip goes in first either left or right.
Spring clip goes in the other direction to the flat clip in between the cylinder and flat clip.
Look close at the end of the clips you will notice the two dimples they should lock them together.

May need to check the manual regarding the adjusters and springs.

Cogged gears, left had thread, right side, right hand thread left side. They go in such that when working the arm, the bar attached to it moves the dog outwards at the bottom, so the right side or O/S, the gear goes clockwise (as seen from the shoe side) and anticlockwise on the left or N/S.

The smaller curved U clip goes in first, from the rear, then the larger flat clip with small holes in the ends goes over it from the front so that clip is nearest to the center of the car.

Don't forget the little H plate in the rearmost shoe where the handbrake link goes through.

I've never noticed a difference in spring length, but then I rarely have 2 side by side, I'll check a few of my spares and see if there is any variation. The parts list only offers one part number though, so it's unlikely that 2 different lengths is factory!

Sprint back brakes are common to a variety of cars, the most common were 60s/70s Ford such as the Capri 3.0L or Cortina GT
and I suspect several companies supplied the component parts.

If it was me, I would try fitting both springs and see how they do,
if they require pulling into place when fitting I suspect they will be fine.
