Had a productive weekend, And managed to get the engine and box out.

Image
split the box off the engine, and can see the front pumpseal that harvey mentioned.
Image
I checked the shaft on the torque converter and it looks nice and smooth, with no grooves or pitting so hopefully its just the seal thats gone.
can anyone tell me where i can get a seal from, tried google/ebay for a bw65 oil pump seal and not a lot comes up.
Have tried all the usual triumph suppliers and none of them seem to stock any spares for the auto box's.
Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Andrew

This may be a silly question, but are all bw 65 gearbox's the same for all different makes of cars or are they individual to the make triumph, rover jag etc.
I contacted Chris witor to check if the seal RTC39RM-T was the one i need for the dolly and he said he was 90% sure but not certain so don't know whether to take a punt or try someware else, had a look on scparts but again they just list parts for other makes not the dolly.

thanks Andrew

Is the seal expensive Andrew? If not it might be just worth ordering one.

Tony.

I know there are some internal differences with clutches etc varied to suit different engines, with cars as varied as a 1300 Marina and 3.5 V8 Rover or 4.2 Jag you'd expect that. But AFAIK the case and external bits are the same and, since that seal is more or less on the outside, my guess is one size fits all. Certainly in my later parts list, RTC39 is listed for all models of Dolomite from 1500 through 1500HL and 1850HL to Sprint. I'd think Harvey is the man who knows, he's the auto guru around here!

Email JPAT automatics as suggested already, they are the specialists and will supply the correct seal.

I second JPAT.

There are internal differences between BW65's, mostly clutch pack sizes, and there are 2 different types of main casing, Jag, Rover & BMW have larger servos, all the rest are smaller.

AFAIK all the front pump seals are the same, but JPAT will know for certain.

Those seals can have an expanding metal spring inside, which can sometimes dislodge when the seal is knocked in, and it's then a PITA to get refitted, so you can pack the back of the seal with some Vaseline, which will hold it in place, and the Vaseline wil just disappear in use.

I thought that they were.
