Can anyone say which Sprints from 1976 and after had the FZX 1257 carbs with the idle screw down a hole in the body and, I think, waxstat jets originally; and which Sprints from 1976 and after had the AUD 663 carbs with the idle screw through a flange or lug on the body with either a locking nut or a spring to hold it?

What've your cars got?

Graham

So where and when were AUD 663s used, several sets of which I have from Sprints, and which the SU Catalogue 1969-1983 (LZT 8032) lists as being for the Sprint from 1976 on, along with FZX 1257. But it don't say anything about the spec of car they were fitted to. Here's a snip from that:

If these weren't around in numbers - I've several sets, I've seen them on Sprint manifolds for sale on eBay as well, and the set pictured in the other thread on Sprint carbs are 663s - I'd think it might be an error in the catalogue, copied and repeated in the Burlen Fuels data. But being as they are around and in numbers, I think they must have been fitted to UK spec Sprints. As far as I can see, the difference in the AUD 663s is they use the BDQ needle like FZX 1257, not BBT like AUD 545 or BCM like AUD 661 and 680.

So, I think, the interesting question sill is, which cars were fitted with AUD 663s?

Graham

A bit more research in the SU Catalogue, LZT 8032:

AUD 663 is only listed for the Dolomite Sprint and no other car. And it is, spec wise, exactly as FZX 1257 except the latter has the LZX 1120/1121 waxstat jets.

That AUD 663 and FZX 1257 have the same BDQ needle suggests to me that they were, as the catalogue states, contemporaries

So, does anyone else have any AUD 663s and do they know what cars they are off?

Graham

Hi Group,

Does someone know what type of needles are used in the Sprint carburettor. Rimmers catalogue gives CUD 1141, CUD 1159 and NZX8015. I suppose that CUD1141 is BBT but what are the others? My '76 Sprint engine vibrates by slight acceleration or gently opening the throttle and hesitates to accelerate. By full opening it runs perfectly.
I suppose it could have something to do with fuel mixture.
Any ideas...

Thanks for all suggestion, Eric
On the carburettor float chambers there shold be little tags to identify which carbs you have.
The codes are for different years of manufacture
1973/4 AUD545........needle CUD1141 (BBT)
1975/6 AUD680........needleCUD1159(BCM)
1976 AUD663.........needle NZX8015 (BDQ)
1976on FZX1257........needle NZX8015 (BDQ)
This information I have obtained from the SU Catalogue.
If there are no tags fitted Eric, then you could post a photograph of the carbs showing their jets, and we should be able to determine which type you have.

As Dave has already said, start with the ignition system.
The rotor arm to distributor connection, through the spring loaded centre contact, is a weak point that gave me bother in the past.
I note that Ian identifies these AUD 663s as 1976 only, and the FZX1257s as 1976 on, which isn't what the SU catalogue I have (pdf of) shows. Is this from a more detailed catalogue or from some other knowledge?

Maybe, if they were only used in 1976 between the AUD 680s and the FZX 1257, that explains why there are a few about, as 1976 production (4035) was only 1600 fewer cars than the total for 77-80 (5639).
