If it does turn out impossible, I believe Rimmer bros sell a slightly smaller NRV with a consequently larger seal as a replacement for the NLA original (think it's from a Landy or summat) It's possible you have this seal and that's why the difficulty.
I'm not normally a big fan of Rimmers, but in this case it may solve a specific problem.
