Richard, an interesting article, I thought the indicator pawl was spot welded on, so to remove does not seem a good idea. It would seem that to successfully dismantle the steering column the Belle Villa washer needs to be removed and replaced, i suspect that they don't come off in one piece, so a replacement is required. is this the idea of the Robsport collar? Malcoln. In response to your comments. The indicator canceller is a spring clip arrangement. The Rimmer's site has a good photograph of it, part number 150815. In respect to the Bella Villa washer I can't remember if I have ever attempted to remove one from the column and I accept it would be very difficult to get it off and reuse it. I can only remember tapping one back up to remove the play in the column. I also had a look on the Rimmer's site to see if they were still able to supply the Bella Villa washer. It states it has been superseded by Washer Serrated alternative part 517480 ALT @ £3.60. It looks very similar to the Bella Villa washer. While surfing the net I also found that the James Paddock Ltd site has what they call a Steering Column bearing tension washer (517480) @£2.90. This looks just the same as the Rimmers alternative. My main aim of posting on the discussion board was to highlight the fact that if you have play in the steering column it may be a result of the Bella Villa washer moving slightly and that if you tap it back up it will remove the end float. Obviously the problem can also be caused by either the upper or lower bearings giving up but my recommendation is check the Bella Villa washer first. |

Are there not two types of adjustable steering mast Richard? Didn’t early 1850s and Sprints have a type that can be taken completely separate? For part numbers I have 309099 as the early type complete assembly and 313325/RKC2098 later version from the respective parts books. I think I have both types of column so need to investigate..... It turns out that the spare column I have is the later version but the good news is that the bearings are okay, whereas the car’s own column bearings are goosed. Ian |
