But presumably this car DID run with the EI feed scotched to the tacho output (A horrible bodge but still....) and the OP didn't mention the tach not working.

Yes. The RVI types do sensor the current feed pulses to the coil, turned on and off by the points. Connecting another current user on coil positive, weakens the pulses as there's a constant user connected also making the tach not working. When you have an RVI tach/ignition system nothing extra should be connected to coil positive as it's not just an +15.

Ok so this is an update on my progress so far. I have tidied up the wiring as follows.- Tach wire ( Live with ignition on ) to the positive side of the coil. Also attached the red wire from the EI to the positive side of the coil. The negative from the EI to the negative side of the coil.So altogether three wires in total.
I ordered the new EI from Powerspark and fitted the new module hoping it would pick up the signal from the existing trigger but it didn't work. So reluctantly after draining the water and taking away the pipes that were in the way removed the distributor ( with the help of my ambidextrous son) Once the distributor was out I stripped it and fitted the new trigger and then refitted the distributor lining it up with marks I had made previously. Then tried to crank the engine with my "sparkright" connected. But no spark!
I then connected the the high tension lead from the coil to a earthed plug and then got a spark. So the problem remains in the distributor and I am temped to revert to points and condenser.
Any ideas would be appreciated Alan

If you have a spark at the king lead but not the plug leads, the problem is either the rotor arm or distributor cap.

Hi Steve, The Distributor cap and rotor are new old stock and I have even tried the originals and no spark.On you tube there's a video made by Accuspark that shows how to test the EI before fitting. So I have taken out the distributor again and rigged it to the test and doesn't work. Monday I'll phone Powerspark and see what they say regarding a replacement ( hope for the best) Alan

I phoned powerspark and they said I had to speak to the technical dept. Well he came up with a few ideas and I tried them all and then I told him I had a good spark when I attach a HT lead from the coil to a earthed spark plug.He said the same as Steve if there is a spark from the coil everything including the electronic ignition module is OK and it must be either the rotor or the distributor cap.
I am completely flummoxed.
In desperation I have phoned a local auto electrician to see if he could come and have a look but he can't come for a fortnight.
I feel a box of matches might be handy!
