Other than by testing the vacuum advance unit, e.g. by sucking on the tube and seeing the points plate move, how would you know that it wasn't working?

So, I suppose the question really is, how big is the effect on fuel consumption, in various conditions like long runs and at steady speed?

I had problems with my 1300 Distrbutor, I tested the vacumn unit off the distributor and also made sure that the mounting plate rotated freely, in my case the plate was siezed.

Suck on the vacum unit to see if it moves .

"Eppur si muove", as [the other] Galileo said. The question is, other than being a sucker, how would one tell if it didn't move?
