it was a reading week Adam...

Like I tell my kids...the job is to get a degree. Much as you love your dolly it is only an old banger. Dont sacrifice your chance at a good career just to keep it on the road. You really dont want to be a back street mechanic who flunked out his first year at uni...

A weeks worth of lectures is a lot of catching up....

This head just doesn't want to come off! I've got the back to move a bit but the front where the stuck stud is jammed solid, I've managed to jack the front of the car up with by the head! Not helping to much as the stud is at an angle to the way its being lifted. I've tryed belting the crap out of it with a rubber mallet and its taking chunks out of this hammer...

Any tips or tricks or do I just put a block of wood up against the front, stand on my wings, and smack the crap out of it with a sledge?!

MOT tommorrow! Arggghhhhh

Is the rope trick applicable here?

Tried it. Starter motors off so put the front pulley back on and used lots of socket extension bars on a ratchet. Was flexing the extension bars quite a bit!

Wood and sledge hammer trick didn't work either...

George??? Help :P

Can you rotate the head at all? If you can get the smallest bit of movement then keep wiggling it. You need to break up the corrosion between the head and the stud. Don't over do it or you'll bend the stud which will wedge it even more.

To get the head to pivot I used a trolley jack on the exhaust manifold, which slid the head over a bit. I'm too weedy to move it  Been pulling my self off the floor trying.

Remove the exhaust manifold. Then the head will rotate around the block.
It wont with it still on. Once you have over quater of a turn you should be able to get a hacksaw blade in.
Anpther idea is to supend the head from your hoist while wacking the end of the stud into the head...
Some means of sustained pressure with a bit of shock is what you want to achieve...

adam you have to persevere with it some just dont want to come off
as jon says with manifold off you have more space and you could always pull off the n/s eng mount to give you a little more room and eat a bit more weetabix or better still some good old porrage oats

The head is off, thanks to Richards brutal ways :D The head is now back on and torqued up... But I've run out of time, 2 hours to do two ball joints, weld a patch on and paint it, put the inelt manifold back on, put the dizzy back in correctly, put the timing chain back on, put the front pulley back on, put the starter motor back on, put the rad back in, put the bonnet back on.... In the pouring rain...

But... I may have a plan to get my car back to Oxford

Get the MOT done tomorrow. There's a place in Bath that I go to that does it "while u wait", just a case of finding a place that will do it.
