Post subject: Leaky spin on adapter
PostPosted: Fri Dec 01, 2006 8:53 am
Since fitting the spin on oil filter adapter to my car I have only carried out one oil change. Since doing it I noticed there is a small leak from the mating surfaces between the block (where the old cartiridge would have sat) and the face of the adapter.

When I removed the old oild filter I did note that the adapter itself seemed to become loose too, yet when I screwed the new filter on everything tightened up again. but it is leaking very slightly.

Have I installed the adapter wrong or should it all become loose when the filter is removed?

If I remember correctly there was a rubber seal between the mating faces and I assume this is now not seating correctly and causing the leak.

I used to have a spin on adapter on my Sprint but took it off as it leaked and wasn't entirely sure it fitted properly anyway. The way the 2 halves slid over each other left me wondering whether it was actually making contact with the mating surface of the original mount. Mine as I say was in 2 parts an outer ring with a thin edge which seemed to seal on an o ring like the canister type and an inner piece that seemed to slide up with another seal which was supposed to seal on the mating surface. Trouble was I found if you tightened the filter too much the whole fell apart which left me wondering if it was actually sealing at all. I will try and take some pics that may explain it better. In a nutshell though I thought it was useless so reverted back to the canister type which although a pain doesn't seem to leak, well everywhere else but there anyway.[/img]

The retailer will tell you they've never had the problem before and question your ability to fit it. The reality is the local TR6 specialist to me buys them in threes in the knowledge he has a fighting chance of getting a leak free one amongst them. The design for Sprint is slightly different; the quality is similar!

Did you see the new seat blanket post Alan?

I had the same problem with this spin on adapter on my TR. After inspecting the parts very closely I found a very small crack (kind of hairline one) in the big seal. After changing it the adapter is leak free for several thousand miles already.

Okay, thanks everyone. So I guess that it's common for it to leak.

There's a saying among those who like their Triumph's with two wheels(and other old British bikes) that if it doesn't have a pool of engine oil beneath it, it isn't British  Maybe it should apply to old British cars too!

So, when the filter is taken off it is usual for it too start coming apart then?

Yes, Alun I did see the the seat blankets post, nice idea, but I think I'll pass thanks.

ALAN

The makers of motorbikes whom are our namesakes used to send em back down the line at PDI if they didn't leak, loosen a few things off to rectify the problem.

Spin on adapt to blocl o'ring seal has become 'nipped'. The threaded bit shouldn't move when chaging the spin on filter.
