In an age when classic car owners are increasingly under threat from measures to "protect the environment", there is one statistic which no one seems to be publicising.
Did you know that 18% of all global warming gases are produced by livestock production? That is more than all the global emissions from all forms of transport put together [source: United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation].

and there is more pollution caused by the manufacture of a new car than the pollution spat out my my fwd in the last 40 years!
so why do the goverment want us to scrap the old cars and buy new ones?
simple answer ,more money for them. grrr.

Whlist in Mallorca last week I saw an article on the TV about the Japanese developing a rice based bio fuel. Great you might think but growing rice produces huge amounts of methane which is apprantly a bad thing for global warming.

However I recently annoyed a friend of my Wife's by suggesting that man made climate change was a myth. She denied this (she is an environmentalist for the RSPB). She winged about people driving everywhere but was happy to scrounge a lift off of me!

I also asked her if she had been enjoying the fine weather recently? She had clearly been enjoying it as she was very brown (this may have been dirt) so I explained that if her hypothesis was true then she really should be thanking all the Range Rover drivers rather than moaning at them.

Vulva have a stastistic about that on their web shite somewhere. They claim that the energy consumed per car at one of their latest plants is equivalent to driving 1500 miles. Pretty shocking if like you and I you've long believed the above quote.

The minor detail the bullshit merchants, sorry marketing people, leave out is that that particular plant is assembly only. Obviously every single panel, lump of plastic, window, engine component even the screws used all come into existance coutesy of the zero emission fairies waving their little sweedish wands. And all these parts get to the assembly plant on sleds made from sustainable source timber and pulled by huskies that never ever fart.

A couple of years ago i saw a report that listed all the chemicals used and pollutants put out by the factory that made the plastics trim ,dash, doorcards ect for VW and it made for scary reading.
this one company caused more pollution than was caused by all the factorys /manufactoring plants in the UK.

maybe we just ban adams car then.....and any other one using more oil than petrol...or just offer a big incentive for people to drive old cars (no disposal costs, no new cars required) and penalise people for emissions.

not necessarily great for the motor trade that though..

I thought you were eluding to the old "1 in 10" myth there for a moment Andy!

I know lots more than 10 folk and none of them are poofs.

Of course you also have to account for the embodied energy in the factory, the machinery, the energy used by the folk getting to work, the dealer network and delivery structure etc etc. Its all BS that can be twisted to however you want it to read, but more than us you would account for rely in some form on the motor trade for our livelihoods.

Take the building industry; without exception, all of the products and materials marketed as being 'green', 'sustainable' or 'recycled' cost considerably more than their 'normal' counterparts...

and they still turn up on site on the back of a 20 year old Foden with more miles on it than the Space Shuttle, driven by your usual brick-carrier who makes more than enough of his own pollutants.

All this stuff about global warming gets on my tits. I can't believe the governments of this world think that by taxing motorists 'it' will all be ok. Then again, there wasn't taxation during the ice age and look what happened there.

andy andy andy... knowing some of the strong characters on here and various differing opinions on pretty much everything, anyone would think you put that there just to provoke a load of banter and possibly a rant or 2!

yep, just like organic food alun, or organic anything.

I think we should turn this obviously serious issue into a game, so rather than do the rant I'll just start it, then get to the conclusion, and it'd be a bit of a chuckle if anyone wanted to fill in the blank, no limit to how many words you can use... ok, here goes:

"while global warming is really happening, its not caused by co2, the worlds co2 mostly comes from the sea and is a result/bi product of global warming, which is actually caused by the sun and theres nothing anyone can do about it...

[blank]

we're all doomed!

the end is nigh!

blah blah

yawn."

ok, fill ya boots...

There was some hessian wearing tree hugging no clue no job tree hugging wonker on the radio last night bemoaning the delay of these home information packs. The delay of these is a disaster for the environment apparantly. How?

(deep breath)

How is it increasing or delaying a reduction in a houses emissions to have some nosey twonk drive a co emitting car to and then poke his beak around a house, drive the same co emitting car home again, generate a stupid form with a rating number on it which said twonk prints on an ozone emitting printer and posts for the royal fail to carry by co emitting vehicle back to the house owner who already bloody knew what percentage of filament bulbs he used and if his walls were cavity insulated two months later than planned?

Not irritating at all.

Aren't we so arrogant believing we can affect the way the world works?

Everything on this planet works on a cycle of renewal, even us. That is exactly what death is, just like this seasons' leaf falling in the autumn to make way for next years new growth. Yes, I agree we should take care of our environment, but when tony et al can't even control litter and grafitti which affects our immediate environment they stand so little chance of success on a macro scale. 'We' are such an insignificant part of things in the global scheme.

What next? Lets all try to stop plate techtonics because of the sulphur and ozone caused when there is a volcano? To prevent tsunami and forest fires? Things we term disasters are only disasters when viewed from a blinkered human scale, the reality is its just the earth having a spring shake down; necessary mechanisms. The will of God/Allah/Ganesh if you like.

It was here before us and it will be here when we are gone.

I expect the dinosaurs worried about it too...

yeah, either that or they were too hung up over issues like trying to get the council to come and empty their brown wheelie bins that were left there full up coz they're too heavy.

derrrr.

maybe if the council emptied them more often they wouldnt be so heavy?

hmmm, my 'obscure tangent generator' seems to be working again...
