These days you can't sell your car tax with the car. You have to get a refund and the new owner has to tax it himself/herself. I've just sold the S2000 and, being half way through the month, I will lose the rest of the tax for this month. If the new owner taxes it in the next couple of days, he will also lose a couple of weeks tax. Can I hold off sending in the V5C until the end of the month so that the new owner can make use of the remaining tax?

Technically no, but as the only issue is whether it comes up on anpr etc then if he wants to play the game you could.

It doesn't have to be the driver that taxes it, just the keeper... It's legal as long as you don't officially sell it to him until the end of the month. Now, he'd have to tell his insurance the car wasn't his though..

Don't knock it Mart, this ridiculous scam (which would be illegal and probably fraud if the government weren't perpetrating it) is probably funding our free tax for 40 year old cars (and some MP's holidays in the sun)

The only thing that surprises me here, is that it's been in force since the tax disc died in Oct 2014 and you've only just noticed!

When I sold my Saab recently, the new owner insured it on the phone before setting off to collect the car and used my computer to tax it (by monthly direct debit) before he left my house, all legal and proper. I hadn't lost anything, cos the car was sorned and I timed the auction to end on the 2nd of the month, so nobody would be paying for tax they couldn't use. You've always had to back tax a car to the beginning of the month you buy it in anyway, so that half of the scam is not news at all.
Knowing the rules is the first step to outwitting them!

It is the owner/keeper who has to pay the tax. DVLA/plod will argue that the new owner has not paid the tax for using the vehicle on a public road - regardless if the p.o. had paid the tax.

Consider it like this
it is no longer: Is the vehicle taxed?
it is now: Has the current owner paid the tax due?

I would not want to remain the registered owner. Think for a moment. Parking fines. Speeding Tickets....

Whenever I've sold a car, the signature, date and time to the closest minute are always written down.
