I'm looking for an outdoor night vision security camera with a range of 50ft, ideally linked to a PC but....I wouldn't want to leave the PC powered up all the time, however the router is always on - does such a thing exist or do I have to go the whole dvr route?

I was going to let someone else have a turn, but as no takers yet, I don't know exactly what you're thinking or budget, but something like the Dlink DCS 4701E is a HD outdoor camera with low light capability and an infrared light built in, needs just a network cable as it's PoE powered, and can write back to a network share hosted on a router such as a Draytek 2830/2860 using a USB memory stick or USB hard drive, or FTP server over an internet connection. Has motion detection capability so can trigger sending an email with a snapshot or short video segment when triggered. Cost is about £160 for the camera.

That camera looks the dogs danglies.
I have one ethernet port left on my Virgin cable router on my 200Mb/s connection. So do I need a switch, since the camera and whatever it connects to will need an ethernet port?

You could just have the camera stand alone, as in view and control with your PC/Laptop/Tablet as it has a built in web server, have it email clips when motion detected so no need for local storage. In that case one port on your cable modem will do just fine, though I can't remember if a power over ethernet injector is included in the box as I was plugging it into a £2,500 Extreme Networks switch, cost you £10 if not.
