After the demise of my Xsara Picasso I bought this.

It is the 2.0 diesel in Exclusive trim with the 6 speed semi automatic transmission and comes with a tow bar. It was up for sale on an ebay classified ad and came with 12 months MoT so once it was taxed & insured it was literally ready to go. I picked it up last night after work. My first impressions are that it runs drives perfectly. Unfortunately, it isn't without its faults. One of the rear seats doesn't fold down properly, the luggage cover is missing, the clips for the tailgate blind are missing, the warning lights on the steering column don't work and the front footwell lights don't work (I fixed the driver's side one - it just needed the connector plugging back in).

The passenger side front footwell light was the same as the driver's so once I'd fished out the connector and plugged it in I had working front footwell lights. I got a price for the luggage cover and it was twice the price of those I've seen on ebay.

I paid a visit to the local Citroen dealer (Evans Halshaw in Bradford) and ordered the clips for the tailgate blind. They will have to be ordered in and they should have them by Wednesday. They will give me a call once they've got them in.

I've just done a service. I changed the engine oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and pollen filter. I've managed to find out why the warning lights on the steering column weren't working. The lights are SMD LEDs which are soldered on a small circuit board and some of the tracks are damaged so I'll have to replace the whole switch assembly which surrounds the driver's airbag.

I've found a replacement steering hub switch assembly offered on a C4 forum for free and it is located in Manchester so it isn't a million miles away from me.
The nearside rear light cluster has been previously damaged and patched up to be able to pass the MoT so I've ordered a replacement on ebay.

My key fobs have seen better days so I've ordered a couple of these on ebay:

It should be a simple matter of transferring the key blade and the electronic gubbins over to the replacement cases.

I've found another piece of missing trim. The part in which the luggage cover is located is missing on the nearside so the local dealer will be geting another order from me when I pick up the clips for the tailgate blind. Since the service the car seems to be more responsive. I don't think that the oil filter and fuel filter had been changed for a long time because the old ones looked like genuine Citroen parts.

The light cluster came in the post today. This is what it looks like next to the old one.

I wasted no time in fitting it and it has lifted the back end. Well worth the money I spent on it. It even came with all the bulbs so I've got a spare set.

This is the missing piece of trim I'll have to order from the local Citroën dealer.

Once I've fitted it, I should have a full set of warning lights working again. It was too late to start working on it once I'd got back from picking it up from Manchester.

I've fitted the clips and now I can put the blind up on the tailgate (not that I need it at this time of year!). I've also fitted the steering wheel control and I now have it fully working. It is nice to see when the indicators are operating and when the foglights are on. When I picked up the clips from the dealer I ordered the missing part of trim and it was just over a fiver. It will be ready to pick up at the weekend.

Well worth the £5.38 is has cost me. Not everything is expensive from the dealer. I've got my eye on a couple of luggage covers on ebay so I might save myself something by watching the auctions rather than getting a Buy It Now.

Ever since I bough this car it has struggled to crank over. It struggles at first and turns over and starts. My first thought was to check the connections to the starter motor and they're fine. I put my multimeter across the terminals and was getting a standing voltage of 12.4 volts. When it was turning over the voltage dropped to just under 8 volts and sometimes the time and date would reset themselves which pointed to a dying battery. The alternator was putting out just under 14 volts at idle with no electrical loads. The only way to be certain would be to get the battery tested properly so I went down to my local Halfords and they confirmed that the battery needs replacing. They tested the alternator too and that is fine. They're asking £95 for a new battery so I'm going to source one a bit cheaper.

you mean £45 battery and £50 halford handling costs,,,,,when my dolly battery died i phoned them for a laugh,,,£76 for 300amp,got one off ebay delivered for £39 360 cca.......halford ripe-off

The car is fundamentally sound and the troublesome things such as the EGS gearbox and the rear air suspension are fine. The lack of service history was a bit of a worry which is why I serviced it at the soonest opportunity.

I managed to liberate the battery.

It has clearly seen better days and going by my measurements it looks to be a 096 so I've ordered one on ebay and it should be here by the weekend.

I've just picked up a luggage cover for just £35 on ebay. That was the starting bid and I was the only bidder presumably due to the time the action finished (10 am). The postage is an extra £20 which is cheaper than the diesel I'd have to use if I collected it from Chelsmford. It still works out cheaper than all the others I've seen so I'm a happy bunny.

I think the point Jod was making is that if this is such a stunning, perfect example, why have you had to spend so much money getting it up to scratch? I'd have the b*****s up on the trades descriptions act! I think the seller must have had a previous career as an estate agent!

When I bought my Xsara Picasso (56 plate 2.0VTR auto, 50k, 1 PO, FSH) in 2012, it needed NOTHING and was completely unmarked inside and out. Cost me £3k and SWMBO loves it!
