The one on the offside of the car (at the left on the photo) is the original filament bulb. It doesn't show it too well because I used the automatic settings with no flash when I took the photo. I'd just got home from work and it was starting to get dark. I prefer the cool white look on the modern. The 1850 also has LED sidelight bulbs but they're a warm white so it has a similar light to a filament bulb with all the advantages of LEDs.

Something I've noticed while driving is that the headlight beam pattern looked to be different on the nearside as if the bulb had failed (the bulb is definitely working!). The nearside dipped headlight bulb was one of the 2 things that this car had failed the MoT on. I was discussing headlight bulbs on the C4 forum (c4owners.org) when I decided to take a look at my headlights and guess what? The nearside dipped headlight bulb was loose inside the headlight unit. When it was changed by the seller, they hadn't fitted it properly. I don't know how it got through the MoT like that unless it has worked loose since then (I've only clocked up about a thousand miles since I bought the car). Once it was fitted correctly it was fine. I won't know if the beam pattern is correct until I'm next behind a car in traffic with the headlights on. I'm now driving to work (a work colleague told me about some free parking that is less than 10 minutes' walk from the office) so I'll find out tomorrow. The LED sidelights show up the halogen dipped beams so I'm considering investing in some decent quality headlight bulbs. I'd fitted Osram Nightbreakers on the Astra and on Ian's recommendation in his Focus headlight thread, I'm seriously considering the Philips Xtreme Vision bulbs. As with the Osrams, I'll be sourcing them on eBay.

Those headlight units - do they have a project lens fitted (xenon) or the fish eye as its also called.

Paul, my headlights are just the standard halogen units. The Xenon directional headlights were an option on the Exclusive. Whoever bought the car new only chose the black paint from the optional extras available.

On the way into work it was sufficiently dark enough to have the headlights on and the beam pattern is as it should be.

Dave how did you find the nightbreakers, on the MG forum they get slated for not lasting long some complaint as low as three months up to just over a year. The Volvo oc also seem to give them a bad report saying they have very poor life expectancy especially in ones like mine that run with dipped beam all the time with people quoting weeks of use before failure.

I fitted a pair in the Astra 2 years ago and as far as I'm aware, they're still going strong with the current owners. They seemed to be the best compromise between brightness and bulb life. I've decided that I'm not going to swap the headlight bulbs anytime soon. I'm certainly not going down the Xenon or HID route either!

Last night on the way back from the meeting the dash lights came on and the car went into limp mode. I turned off the engine at the soonest opportunity and restarted it and it was running normally but the engine management light was still on and I got a "Depollution system faulty" message on the display. My first though was that the DPF (diesel particulate filter) needed recharging so I gave it a good run on the M62. The engine light was still on when I got home. When I started it up this morning the light went out and it has been fine ever since so it must've been the DPF.

Not necessarily. When this happened to my VW Touran Diesel it did exactly the same as yours - the light came on, and it went into limp home mode. Switching off and restarting fixed it. But it kept coming back. It turned out to be the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve), and it cost me over £600 to have it changed because it was such an awful job. I had it done at an independent garage I trust - the VW dealer wanted £1000. It is apparently 5 hours labour on my car.

My sister in law had a VW Sharon thing which they bought new in 2012 and had terrible problems with its emission system including the EGR and DPF. It cost them a small fortune to sort out and then it choked itself again and the lights came on and it limped home again. Someone was supposed to have forced a regeneration on several occasions but they gave up in the end and chopped it in for a petrol Kia. Think it'd only done about 60k but was basically knackered.

After I sorted through the parts I decided to get underneath the car and find out where the clicking noise was coming from. I jacked up the front offside and when I was turning the front wheel by hand I could hear the clicking sound. It wasn't coming from the driveshaft. I disconnected the anti roll bar drop link and the sound was still there. I don't know what it could be so I'll just live with it for now. Before I did this I took it through a car wash and there was a can of tyre foam among the parts I got from Steve W. so I used that on the tyres and it looks better now.

How is the pests population in your area? You don't have any mice hidden between the wing and splashguards? Mice do make clicking sounds all the time.

Actually that is a strong possiblity - happens a lot round here because we are rural.
Might be worth leaving some cheese in the footwells overnight, see if you can tempt the little blighters out.

The more observant among you will have noticed that the chrome trim at the top of the nearside wing is missing. The local dealer was asking just over £50 for a new one so I decided to keep a lookout on ebay. I saw one for £30 so I immediately grabbed it.

I fitted it to the car at the soonest opportunity.
