Strange how all and sundry die and are quickly mentioned on here and when a true giant of motoring dies there is nothing
No man did more for racing than John Surtees in this country and though enthusiasts were baffled as to why he was never knighted he remained the only man to win world championships on motorcycles and F1.
He famously walked away from a Ferrari F1 when his car was given to a teammate to race. Push John Surtees and get pushed back.
The BBC briefly mentioned him dying but got his name wrong!
Back in the sixties when creeps were in short supply the RAC handbook had many phone numbers and addresses of top drivers and one young racer phoned John Surtees and was surprised and pleased to have a half hour chat on how he (the young man) could progress in racing.
Truly a great champion and man of integrity.
RIP "Sir" John Surtees.
