The Triumph Dolomite Club - Discussion Forum

Just a quick question from your newest plonker member. Again.
Why are there so many hopeful members who post ? Why not just join?

The club offers a lot of benefits, although as I don't need any panels and because there is no local group anywhere near me, I don't get all the benefits I could. However, I appreciate the effort that members have gone to in providing repair panels and replacement parts, so personally I want to support the club.
There are a number of other Triumph clubs that I have been a member of over the years, but I find this the most friendly and helpful of all of them.

Though the TDC runs this forum, unusually the forum does not REQUIRE participants to be members of the club. The hopefullness comes from the CLUB hoping folk will join. Some (most) do eventually, some, for various reasons, choose not to!

Some of the 'hopeful' members will be members - but they have to ask to have their status changed to 'member'.
Others will be lapsed members for whatever reason.
Still others will be members in the future, if not for the altruistic reasons of Nick then perhaps when they find they need spares that only the club can supply.
£27 per year, helps to fund this forum (that's a guess) and you get a shiny colour magazine through the post every couple of months. NEC resto show, Stoneleigh, NEC November, TDCIR, others?
Most of them are too far for my Dolly, the car is in a shabby state anyway, but I feel £27 per year isn't too much.
Others may have multiple cars with multiple clubs to join, something has to give.
I like that this forum is free, friendly, helpful and as far as the cars go, non judgemental. I wouldn't be a member if I couldn't access this forum, the forum is why I joined in the first place.

The fact that the forum is open and available to anyone is a great asset to the club. It is a great example of the club's principles and ethos, and I think it is a great advert.

I am not even a Triumph owner at the moment but I am a member and will renew, I have had great support in the past from the club and just wan to "give a bit back"

You're very kind, but I benefit from the club in that (I think) my car insurance is cheaper by being a member, I benefit from the discussions on this forum and I will be buying parts through the club in the future. I am sure there are other benefits, too. I just believe in supporting something that is good. I also know how much work goes into running a club.
A few years ago when times were a bit harder I had to seriously consider which clubs and charities I was a member of. I was actually swayed by the fact that some other clubs only allowed access to their forums for members of the club. I thought that was a bit too exclusive for my liking!

Whilst hoping not to steal his thunder, we have just appointed an Area Organiser for Scotland, so hopefully there will be a meet set up and maybe some events north of the border. Details will be in the next issue of Dolly Mixture .

That's good news but arranging meetings in Scotland is not easy - I should know I tried to do it for the Caledonian Centre of the MG Car Club for a number of years. They have nearly 400 members north of the border, but even so, events generally only attract 10 - 20 cars, and evening pub meets just didn't work. We tried to set them up in various locations like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Aberdeen, but the only person that turned up was the local committee member who organised it. I think one of the problems is that distances in Scotland are so great and the membership is very scattered.

I guess the Dolomite club has nothing like that number of members in Scotland, and they will be all over the place like the MGCC members are. Nobody wants a 2 hour drive to attend a pub meet, although they might for a day's event. I'll watch what happens with interest. I wish the Scottish Organiser every success.

Yes, it certainly isn't easy in Scotland. I was the Edinburgh group leader for the TR Register for a number of years in the '90s, but struggled to get more than a handful of members to attend any meetings. We tried holding our meetings at the same time and place as the Stag Owners Club, but eventually I was the only TR Register person who turned up. I suspect our best bet would be to hold joint meetings with all of the other Triumph clubs.

I don't know about camping! Most of the MGCC members are well past the age where they want to stay in a tent, me included. Perhaps you Dolomite owners are all young whipper-snappers.

I think that holding a regular group meeting is going to be a big ask of our new AO, but I think the intention is to hold get togethers at various shows during the year. I think it would be great to see a Scottish Dolly Day taking place at some point.
