Post subject:  Driving a Datsun (POS) in India

Having been roped into coming to India for a couple of weeks, I managed to rent a car and thought I'd share the experience.

Hard to get anyone to rent a car to a foreigner (yes I am) due to the belief that your not used to driving here (blah)

The car is sub 1l and runs on unleaded or gas, top end speed does not matter but i got 140kph out of it, most importantly it has air con :D

Driving in town is no different to Cental London, except there are hardly any traffic lights (red, green or amber means carry on), no direction of travel prohibited no pedestrian crossings, no speed enforcement (not that you can get over 50kph) and no cameras ! Rush hour driving is good fun, inches from each other going in all directions, if you don't keep crawling you may as well come to a stop, and be hooted deaf.

The only rule really is don't hit anyone, it's a driving melee, I'm sure most of the forum members would love it.

Driving on the highway is pretty much the same, no lane discipline, just turn into a boy racer (within limits, truck drivers don't see cars) and the roads have the occasional large pothole.

Night driving in pouring rain is a bit stressful when you don't know where you are going and other road users may not bother with lights, mostly mopeds and motorbikes.

Overall it's not as bad as portrayed, the speeds are lower but you never come to a stop, just filter in or out, and same for turning or U turning, reminds me of black cab drivers.

Unleaded is cheaper at about 85p a litre with gas being half of that.

Hope to be back soon.

Yep, good one today was three lanes of traffic with both outer lanes going in one direction and me in the centre lane going in the opposite way at 60kph, not a problem everyone was cool with it, and it saved me going to the next roundabout to get to the underpass, good fun.
