Post subject:  Colonials visiting Blighty. Seeking your advice.

Hello Folks,

My wife and I are planning a trip touring the UK in August/September next year and we're planning to take a day out to visit the Goodwood Revival. For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to go to a Revival. But before I book and part with my hard earned cash, I wonder if someone who's been before could give me some advice on just about everything. Like, which day to visit, where to park, which admission package to buy etc, etc. I'm assuming that at least one of you is wealthy enough to have been there before..... boy, those ticket prices are up there....$558 for the 2 of us. (Admission and Roving Grandstand access). Will we NEED a grandstand view?

Please feel free to offer ideas on other things you feel that an (Older) Aussie Old Car Guy ( & his wife) might be interested in seeing......and I don't just mean cars and machinery, either. I've, only just last night, found out about Cheddar Gorge, and boy am I looking forward to driving through there.

I really look forward to your replies.

Thanks in advance and Cheers,
Rob

The weekend before Goodwood is the Beaulieu Autojumble, thats one not to miss. Goodwood is great, you dont need Grandstand, just standard ticket, wander round and take it all in :D . Ill be at both events. Matt

I've been to the Revival three times, but each time someone else was paying (corporate hospitality etc). You certainly don't need a grandstand ticket. It is possible to walk right round the circuit and there is good viewing from everywhere. If you love old cars, old planes and nostalgia you can't beat it. There can be huge queues of cars at the entrances. I haven't been for a number of years now, but there used to be a free bus service from Chichester bus station and that could by-pass all the queues, so seemed like a good option.
Accommodation near the circuit can be an issue too.

I have been to every Revival since the first, and would not miss it for the world.

It is one of those things that the maxim, "expensive but worth it" genuinely applies to. The cost does not stop at the tickets, as once inside the circuit, everything is expensive as well (this years highlight being £8 for two slices of cheese on toast). I go for all three days and rarely have change from £1,200 by the time everything is added up (though that does include the tickets themselves and accommodation).

Without doubt the best days to go are the weekend days. Saturday is always very busy, whereas the crowds thin out noticeably after lunch on the Sunday as folk make an early break for home.

The most relaxing way to get there is to get the train to Chichester and then get the shuttle bus for £5 to the circuit. This avoids the traffic queues, as also has the useful side benefit that you can have a drink for two.... The buses run back to Chichester up until about 10.00pm so you can stay on in the evening and experience the atmosphere (and have another couple of drinks).

If you must drive for goodness sake get there early, like proper early. The traffic queue to get in has in some years exceeded two hours by 9.00am. The traffic management has improved gradually over the years, but you are talking about funnelling huge numbers of vehicles down very tight country lanes, so there is always a log jam. The same applies in the evening trying to get out of the place as well.

Contrary to others I would get a roving grandstand ticket. I never used to because, as others have said, there are many good vantage points around the circuit. I first bought the ticket three years ago and would now never be without one. I say this for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is VERY tiring. You have an early start, walk miles (literally) around the circuit and to stand on your feet all day is very wearing - it is actually nice just to have a sit down from time to time. Secondly, in the event of any kind of inclement weather (a frequent occurrence at Goodwood), a grandstand does give much needed cover - especially for the ladies.

Other thoughts:

Get there early - you will want to look at the pre-66 car park (fantastic all by itself) and the Over The Road attractions.
Try not to carry loads of stuff - it is a real hassle when walking from place to place
You do an enormous amount of walking (as stated), so wear footwear that won't cripple you.
Do dress up in vintage clothes - you will feel much more part of the occasion.
The race with the most incident in usually the St Marys Trophy - don't miss it.
Eat your lunch early or late - the queues are horrendous during the natural lunch break. Or take your own picnic, but remember my first point above.
The most incidents occur at St Marys, Lavant Corner or Woodcote - these are the best places to watch, but because of that they are also crowded.
Enjoy yourself - it is a quite unique event.

I hope this helps you little. Feel free to ask more if you wish.

My Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply with so much detail. Its much appreciated.
It's given me/us plenty of info that we can use...... that we can base our planning on.
It seems that even though its an expensive day out....its well worth it.
Again, "Thank You"
Rob

EDIT..................
PS; I've just booked accommodation in Portsmouth for 3 nights. We'll drive to Chichester and take the shuttle bus from there to the Revival and return.
So, again, THANK YOU.
Cheers,
Rob

Rob, I hope you'll be able to venture "oop north" during your visit. It is quite civilized up here.

OH yes. We'll definitely be spending a few days up north.
We toured around the UK in 2007 and from memory, spent a few days looking around places like Castle Howard, Whitby, Goathland and spent far too much time in the National Railway Museum. We did find civilization extended that far and we were treated very well indeed. As a matter of fact, I cant remember anyone being unkind to we Aussies anywhere in the UK.
I know that there is lots to see around Yorkshire, so we'll definitely be back. We are also planning on going WAaaaaay up north to the Orkneys too. Part of a Rabbies tour just before we visit the Tattoo.

BTW....An Anglophile friend who lives not far from me (who owns the sole remaining Ferguson Diesel powered Vanguard Station Wagon in this country), spent all 3 days at the event a coupe of years back. Club members have nicknamed him Sir Stirling. Anyway, between the good advice on this thread and long conversations with him, we've booked our Revival tickets.....for the Saturday. Being just for the one day, we figured we'd be seeing lots of other things as well as the racing, so we chose not to buy Grandstand tickets.
So, should you see a couple of older "lost" Aussies wandering around, out of period dress, introduce yourselves. It might be us. And like the UK's Northerners, we're civilized too.

Cheers,
Rob

If you're going to be somewhere in Yorkshire on the 4th of September, you could attend the West Yorkshire meeting that will be taking place that evening. I might even have my 1850 auto back on the road by then! Details of the meeting are in my sig below.

Make it happen! I've given you PLENTY of notice.

And of course, the TDC's own annual rally, TDCIR, is likely to be held in September, probably the 2nd Sunday, if you will still be here then!

Gentlemen,
Thanks for all the suggestions and advice.
We are planning to be over on the West Coast too, Tony.
I've heard that up in Canberra, about 200kms from here, is a Dolomite with an injected Holden Commodore 3.6 liter V6 in it. The owner calls it "Dollydore".

Rob

Post subject:  Re: Colonials visiting Blighty. Seeking your advice.

Hi,
The time is upon us..... We leave next week for about 6 weeks in the UK.
Since I've had about 18 months to plan for it, we have a full agenda/schedule, with something planned for each day..... and unlike our first time touring the UK, all our accommodation is booked. (thank heavens)
After a few days in London visiting family mostly, we'll be in Scotland from 12th Aug to the 25th Aug. (including the Tattoo) Then we'll be touring England and Wales from the 25th Aug till the 16th Sep.
The National Motor Museum and the British Motor Museum are both on the list, as is a visit to Racing Point at Silverstone. But the best bit is, we have our tickets for the Revival.
Another good thing is that the AU$ is strong against the GB£ presently. Parity is AU$1=£0.50, but presently its at about £0.56. I've travelled to the US mainland 7 times over the years and Hawaii a further 5 times. But where our AU$ equals about US$0.68, I think I'm done travelling state-side. I feel much more comfortable in the UK AND, like us, you drive on the correct side of the road.
Sandy and I are quite well travelled and even though I'm approaching 70, I still get excited about travelling. This time is no different
I hope the weather then is better than its been reported lately.
Cheers,
Rob

Will you be coming to the TDCIR in Oxfordshire on 08 September? You’ll probably win the long distance award!

We'll be in the Stoke - Hanley area visiting my wifes family then.
I can see that Oxford's not too far away, but because they (family) have quite a bit planned for us, it'd be rude of me to skive off, eh?
Cheers,
Rob

There are a lot of Triumph owners close to Hanley Rob. How long will you be in the area?

Cheers,
Tony.
