Yippee the EU has done it again. It wont be long before every vehicle will be rolling along with an exact gap, permission will be needed to turn off, or even a route plan required for every journey. I think I will keep the one I have and drive it into the ground. Will it stop accidents ? I bet it doesn't.
We are all doomed, doomed . Wise words from Dad's Army..

Lets hope the EU will leave classics alone.

Well it seems that Boeing's driver assistance system doesn't work that well.
Anything that stops the German car behind from driving 3mm from your rear bumper has to be worth thinking about though, right?

seeing as this won't happen for three years (if it happens that soon) and will only affect NEW cars from that date I really don't see any problem unless you want to speed in your new car.
100 years ago people were having heart attacks at the thought of being able to travel faster than walking pace

My car has got a sign recognition system. It often picks up signs by the side of another road or just makes them up. I could switch the system off but I'd have to do it every time I start the car, I just choose to ignore them. The proposed technology would use a similar system, pretty unworkable in the real world.

It is just another step along the road to full automation.
We have all sorts of driver aids available now, we are testing them out and as more and more are added eventually no driver required.

Don't worry. It it not really an EU idea, but more a global move. I also fully expect cars will have permanent dashcams fitted at some point, along with data recorders so a finger can easily be pointed.

On teh plus side, it will put an end to teh police interceptor type programs on TV. I expect cars to be able to be disabled via the interweb. That will be fun.

Next we'll be having someone walking in front with a red flag like they did way back when.

None of this stuff is truly new, I had an old 84 Cadillac that had automatic headlamp dipping, that would pick up reflections from road signs and dip the lights without another car in sight, so was totally useless. Just like a lot of the rest of this stuff the powers that be are trying to force on us.

The simple fact is, that no matter how smart the tech, it's not as smart, or as adaptable as a human brain. Sure humans get tired (and p155, unfortunately) but tech goes wrong and doesn't even know when it's made a mistake, tech can't tell the car to slow below the speed limit when it's foggy, or change lanes when it's too late to brake, or leave a bigger gap to the car in front when it's raining.

This speed limiting thing will be able to be overridden in the same way a cruise control can be, the scariest thing is having a black box in every car to grass you up if you go over too often. Big Brother will soon be watching everything, my only consolation is that i'm unlikely to live to see it!

In the meantime, I was reading the discussion on this on the Retro Rides forum and one comment struck a chord with me, "any car that I own, for the rest of my life, has ALREADY been built!"

Ill give it a month before someone breaks the coding and comes up with a box that plugs into the obd port to turn the limiter off

The system will easily be overridden by placing your right foot on the accelerator, it seems that despite all the media hype the system won't be a true limiter as we think of it but a speed recognition system that will work by either 'reading' road signs or by GPS, and will slow the car if you exceed the posted speed limit to over ride it will be a simple case of applying the throttle if you continue to speed and warning will appear on the dash.
if this is the case a piece of gaffer tape and snip the wire to the GPS module, job done for those who have bought a new car and don't want to keep to the speed limits.

apparently according to one knowledgeable internet user if you speed the system will automatically inform DVLA who then fine you putting the points on your licence and taking the fine money from your bank account that very same day. yes I did point out that its not the DVLA or issue speeding fines but they also wouldn't know who is driving but BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
