I voted for the merlin... slightly biased as I did my apprentiship in the 80's at the factory that was built to produce the merlin in 1938.... I worked on some as an apprentice.

The factory even had terraced houses painted on the side to try and confuse the Luftwaffe when trying to bomb the factory, this is still evident today if you look closely.

They both have the same bassline and beat, the Griffon wins by a hair by being a tad deeper and throatier. You can actually HEAR the extra horses singing!

The deeper sound stirs up more emotion for me. What a plane and what a sound👌

I voted Merlin. The Griffon certainly has more sound to it but more is not always better. The Merlin Spitfire is instantly recognisable to me as a Spitfire, the Griffon is not. When I win the lottery (or possibly win it several times over :? ) I'll be shopping for a Merlin Spit. And then I'll wake up and have my cornflakes.

One of my main hobbies is a WWII researcher, especially aviation from the interwar years to 1945. As it turned out the wife's grandfather worked for Vickers-Armstrong at Weybridge and knew Barnes Wallis quite well. He also knew Joseph "Mutt" Summers, the test pilot for Vickers-Supermarine. Summers actually test flew the early Spits with the Merlin engine.

However, quite a number of Merlins, during WWII, were Packard-Merlin made under license in the US. Even the BBMF Spits and Hurricanes use the the Merlins based on the Packards of the 1940s. AFAIK, the Griffon was a constant development of Rolls Royce.

Both are fabulous and sound great. Very distinctive sounding.

They're both absolutely fabulous.
