My son and I have recently broken a 1991 Legacy and have fitted the 2.5 litre engine into his 1987 VW T3 wasserboxer camper van. It has absolutely transformed the vehicle from a sluggish and uneconomical moving road block into a van that can keep up with the traffic and use much less petrol while doing it. Smashing engine.

Yeah great engines I put one in my 1981 air cooled T3 camper 5 years ago now, went from 75 bhp to 165bhp, much better and safer.
I would think Subaru's of that vintage will be getting quite rare as so many get broken for VW conversions.
