When at the same rotation the change of drive will have gears mesh at bthe opposite side of the gearteeth. Faces that in normal driving conditions never have contact but changing who drives who does have the gears touch eachother on the other side.




At helical gears at the same rotation who drives who does have the opposite push away. So the gears are pushed away from eachother in opposite direction as normal. Gearboxes have thrust washers fitted also inbetween gears and those are not taking the load this way but may little circlips that normally don't see any load in normal driving conditions.



When driving a gearbox from the flange does have all the forces and contact areas opposite as the driven gears are now driven by the others.

Use an old engine adapter plate to mount and locate your motor concentric to the input shaft as that will bolt to the bell housing…

Yes, but then it will be rotating the wrong way.

I tried using my mains-powered electric drill this morning. It worked, but I think I would need to get a more industrial type drill if I want to run it for more than a few seconds. It's like when you prime the oil system in the engine using a drill on the hex dizzy drive, it needs a fair amount of torque.
