Hello!
Is there a guide anywhere on how to change rear wheel bearings?
I have dropped my Dolomite to my local garage after it broke at Castle Combe. I think it is more likely a wheel bearing failure than the diff. They have not done anything to it and seem confused on how to do the job. They are waiting for me to send them bearings and seals before attacking it more violently..... Any help?

Cheers,

Nico

You need a dedicated and very strong hub puller to get the hubs off the half shafts. Even then the hub can get distorted if its REALLY tight. Various members have such a device or I believe you can still buy the original Churchill type puller (or reasonable facsimile) I'm fairly sure the TSSC shop do one as it also works on the small chassis cars (Herald, Spitfire, Vitesse etc) About £50-60 IIRC but with the power you are putting down with that beast you could be doing this a lot!

I also need to do this since the tight diff in my Toledo has eaten both wheel bearings. For the moment I've swapped the drive shafts with another pair but I'd also like a brief 'how to' guide. Is it as 'simple' as splitting the hub and shaft and there you go?

It is pretty straight forward once you get the hub off the half shaft, as Steve said. If you don't have a puller just take the shaft to someone who has a hydraulic press.

Put bars across press so it's just supporting the hub, with the shaft hanging.. Press on the end of the shaft. Can get the bearing off in a similar way if it's stuck. Mine made a fkcin' hell of a noise..

Mine was alright. Electric impact got it off.

The last Sprint halfshafts that I pushed out took 12 1/2 tons pressure

If your garage don't know how to change a wheel bearing take the car somewhere that does.

Using a press does deform the bearings and they dont come off. Most of the time a big hammer does the job.

I made a how to last year using a steel wheel as a hub puller.

Steve, that's the easy bit.

Jeroen, does this work on Dolomite rear hubs? I know that this method was used on the Herald halfshafts but the Dolly is a different beast.

Canley Classics sell the hub puller and it has been proven to work so it might be worth paying out for it. Nico, can your local TSSC members help with the loan of such a tool?
