I finally went over and it turns out that the steward learnt to drive in a Dolomite. I've made an executive decision and the monthly meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of every month. The venue is

The Hollies Sports & Social Club
12 Hough Lane
Bramley
Leeds
LS13 3NE

The first meeting will therefore take place next Tuesday at 8.00pm. I'm sorry it is short notice. It would be much appreciated if you can make it with or without a Dolly. Non club members are also welcome to attend the meetings.

Hope to see at least some of you there.

I lived in Leeds for 10 years but have recently moved across the Pennines to Manchester (sorry.) Would it be possible to join you for one of the monthly meetings unless you know of a Manchester based equivalent?

Thanks - Justin.

Justin, please make it if you can. This will be the first meeting since taking over as AO. I should've sorted it out a lot sooner and I won't hide behind the excuse of getting my 1850 back on the road. It got an MoT in the middle of July. I've already e-mailed Steve W. to let him know so I'm hoping he can make it. I hope he managed to get in touch with Roger and Kath. Another club they're members of holds their meeting at the same place. I'm having trouble with the brakes on the 1850 at the moment so I might have to take the Astra.

Bob, see you there on Tuesday.

Trevor, I certainly have no objections (I'm a Bantams fan myself being Bradford born) but I'm not so sure if it is a good idea having knocked Leeds out of the Capital One cup...

I have every intention of driving the Sprint over to you on Tuesday after work. Should be there for 8pm but if the weather is really bad, I may have to cancel. Fingers crossed it will be mild.

Sorry guys i've just turned around and gone home. Accident on the M60 has had me crawling along for the last hour. I'd be there for 10pm and I have work at 8am so it's a fail from me. Real shame that because I had been looking forward to this all week. I will try to make the next one. Do you ever hold meet ups on the weekend? At least then I don't have to worry about getting home too late.

There were only 3 of us turn up. Bob, Trevor and me all in our modern cars. No Dolomites because Trevor's weldathon continues, Bob's having electrical issues affecting the lights and I've got virtually non-existent brakes. Justin, we heard about the accident so we reckoned that was why you didn't make it. I did try to have a Sunday afternoon meeting but most places are too busy on that day so it wasn't going to be a go-er. It was just informal chat over a couple of drinks. I was expecting Steve W. but I can only assume that he had other commitments. Once it has been announced in the magazine, I'm hoping that numbers will improve over the coming months. Still it wasn't too bad considering the short notice.

Next meeting is Tuesday 7th October at 8.00pm.

I might take you up on that offer oily66.

I want to come to the meetings A.) to meet some people with the same interest in classic cars as me and hopefully make some friends in the process and B.) to learn from all your experience. I'm 31 years old and those that know me would not say that I am practically minded. This is my first classic and I know that they take some looking after....which leads me nicely on to a problem I discovered yesterday whilst trying to get across for the Bramley meeting. My headlights have stopped working!

I do have two extra spot light style lights on the Sprint and these were still working so I had decided to risk the journey until I got stuck in the traffic. The four main headlights are dead. The lights on the dash board still work as do the rear lights. So can we try some distance teaching/fixing? Can someone tell me where to start? Would I need to get behind the dash or is it something that is accessible?

Thanks in advance. J

LIGHTS

That's an interesting problem! Can I ask a few questions?
Do the sidelights work?
Are the spot lights separately switched or do they work through the dip/main beam switch?
Do the inner pair not work when main beam selected?

First thoughts would be that if the spots are worked through the dip switch without relays fitted then the switch has over heated (the full current being drawn though the switch) and softened the plastic and the little brass rivets that make the contacts have come adrift. If the sidelights/rear lights/dash illumination work then it seems that the main rotary switch is ok.

Give us a few more clues and I'm sure someone will come up the the solution

Ian

The spotlights are operated using a switch on the right hand side of the steering column so I think they are seperately wired but not sure. The headlights had stopped working before I switched the spotlights on.

All other lights in the Sprint work. Indicators, side lights, rear lights, interior lights etc. None of the 4 main headlights work when the knob is twisted to the first position or the full beam position. :?

The first thing to do is to check if the lights have power.

To do this :
remove headlamp cowl and a headlamp, then use a meter (or test lamp) to check for power.
(Meter set to DC voltage on a setting of 20 volts, you want a reading of 12V.)
blue/red is dip
blue/white is main beam
black is earth.

Please let us what you find.

Ian.

I wonder if the stalk has burnt out. It is strange that all the sealed beam have stopped working. This should really be the subject of a separate thread.

Getting back on topic, I need to write my (brief) area meeting report for the next edition of DM...
