Is pressure still in the expansion bottle when the engine has been run upto temperature and then allowed to fully cool without removing the filler or pressure caps inbetween?
If so,these are most likely combustion gases which are leaking into the cooling system.

Sorry but this is a stonewall case of h/g pressurising.

You can try retorquing the head, but its 95% a waste of time. Find yourself a good TR7 engine, as chances are your head studs
won't come out.

What happened to the old fashioned method of sticking your nose in the expansion tank to tell if the head gasket has gone?! I love the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons first thing in the morning!

I agree with Jonners, classic hg failure pattern, but as it starts to behave once hot and expanded you might get away with retighting the cylinder head, but the damage is probably done and it will just buy you some time.

After all investigations, removing manifold to get at waterpump, discovered the waterpump is fine. Did compression tests and again all was fine. In the end I removed the new expansion tank cap and replaced it with the old slightly worn one, and the problem appears cured, car doesnt overheat in traffic, completed an hour or so run today and when stopped, removed the expansion cap and there was no build up of pressure or bubbling. I'll keep you all updated to see if there is any change.

You're not the first person to encounter this.

The expansion bottle, especially the plastic version, is well known as the weakest link of the cooling system
(because the cap can't seal properly).

There are ways to counter this,
fitting a proper header tank is one option
or,
if you wish to retain an original appearance,
you can convert to Evans Waterless Coolant.
This runs at atmospheric pressure thereby eliminating any problems with cap/expansion tank failing to seal.

Changing to both EWC and a header tank is better still.

The cooling system should run under a certain pressure if you are water based. I don't know the actual figure. The pressure prevents the water from boiling and the cap regulates the pressure. Fitting the old duff cap is not fixing the issue of over pressurisation caused by a dubious sealing head gasket. It will only delay the inevitable failure.
