Papworth's TR6 gearbox was likely to be the earlier version with the very desirable A type overdrive.

I paid a small fortune to have my A type and 'box reconditioned 20 years ago.

The Paddock option is the one I'd go for, or at least have a conversation with them...

Speaking from recent experience,

I would say ring everyone possible, and try to negotiate a complete price,
ie; removal, recon, refit and no extra charge until fully functional.

Having seen Steve's (Carledo) offer, I would put him at the top of the list.

Thanks for all of the contributions, it's actually given me a lot of food for thought, some good leads, some very kind offers, and at the same time a lot of project scope creep! I say that as I am now thinking that I should do the right thing and do an engine bay refresh at the same time. I've said it before, but it's so refreshing that I can just take my time and get it done right.

I SOLD a TR6 box with A type O/D (which had been out of a car for at least 15 years and was of completely unknown quality) to Mike Papworth earlier this year, for only a few pounds less than Paddocks are asking for a recon! However, I suspect Paddocks box will not include the overdrive unit. Even so, it is remarkably cheap! Mike is definitely worth a bell, his quality and workmanship are beyond reproach. I have his number if you can't find it.
