I have been reading Jon's excellent guide to the slant engine water pump and using a slide hammer and Rimmer's silly little ring bolt, I got the innards out easily. But the cage doesn't want to budge. Jon says "its only 2 O-rings holding it in." Hmmm.

I need some clarification about where I can apply the slide hammer hook. In my photo, is the lip I have arrowed part of the cage or part of the head casting? I don't want to risk hammering the wrong bit.

Any advice for removing the cage please?

My impeller looks like it has been under the sea for 40 years! How do I clean the barnacles off it?

You are better off fashioning a puller rather than using a slide hammer for the cage; the lip you identify is correct, but if you use a hammer it is easily distorted.

Thanks guys. This morning I fabricated the tool shown in Mad Mart's diagram out of 1/8" steel plate and applied it to the job. All that happened was that the tool ended up banana shaped. The cage didn't budge a tenth of a millimetre. I suppose I'd better find some thicker steel.

Ha! I like your style! Unfortunately I don't have the services of a forklift, and in any case the engine is out of the car. I'm still pondering on Jon's quote "it's only 2 O-rings holding it in....."

Robert the Bruce watched a spider spinning its web and came to the conclusion that one must try, try, and try again. So I remade the tool in that great diagram out of 3/8" thick steel that was lying around in my garage. It still bent , but slowly, slowly the cage came out. Amazingly it wasn't damaged by all my efforts.

It was only held by two O-rings ............ and 40 years worth of corrosion gunk. Once again I don't know what I would have done without the help available here. thanks all.

The metal strip with a slot could just be a washer with the sides trimmed. I'm surprised 3/8" strip bent! My strip is only about 4mm. I think, and I have never had that bend.

Lol... I guess I have never done one that's been sitting for so long. Mine have all bumped out with the slide hammer according to your excellent photos..

Do the bush at the bottom...your next fun task is to extract it. I dont mess about any more and just destroy them with a punch and pull them out with pliers. I've wasted too much grease and time with the "hydraulic" method.

I would suggest some nice cider vinegar or a soak in coke to disolve some of that muck.
